L. "GENE" Acclaimed purveyor of meats and cattle, entrepreneur, S.L. "Gene" Thompson died on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006, following a bout with pneumonia. He was the owner and proprietor of Thompson Packers Inc. in Slidell, as well as Rocking T Ranch in McNeill, Miss. His death marks the demise of a legend in the meat and cattle industries. Gene reflected a man of extraordinary strength, endowed with leadership skill, professional acumen and tireless commitment. Born on Dec. 9, 1925, in Hammond, he was the son of Glenn Ellis Thompson and Martha Bruce Thompson. One of three children, brother Ellis and sister Anette, Gene grew up in an environment dedicated to the Lord, work and service. After selling his Slaughter Plant and Meat Market, he continued with the Meat Plant and Cattle Ranch, which are operating as of today. Gene was the first president of the Beefmaster Breeders Universal organization outside of the state of Texas. He served in all capacities in the organization and was on the board. The award of Breeder of the Year was given to him in 1985. A past president of Louisiana Beef Week, board member of the Louisiana Department of Corrections, Boy Scout supporter, former deacon of Mid City Baptist Church and leader in the embryo transfer field, he received his last award as Cattleman of the Year for Pearl River County in 2005. He was honored by Kiwanis International, Young Men's Business Club and a New Orleans District Livestock Show sponsor and promoter. A lifelong resident of Hammond, he died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, at his home. He was 80, born Sept. 25, 1918, in Hammond. A retired electrical contractor, he was owner of Thompson Electric Inc., founded in 1933. He attended school in Hammond, graduated from Coyne Electrical Institute in Chicago in 1939, and worked in the business from 1945 until his retirement in 1995. From 1941 to 1945, he served in the U.S. Army, Battery A 869th Anti-aircraft Artillery Battalion, overseas in forward and battle areas.
