JAMES ALEXANDER Dr. James Alexander Thorburn, 84, of Baton Rouge and Hammond and formerly of Martins Ferry, Ohio, died at home on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2007. He was born Aug. 24, 1923, on Scotch Ridge, a son of Charles D. and Mary E. (Ruble) Thorburn. He retired from Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond as professor emeritus of English and linguistics, having also taught at LSU, the University of Missouri, University of Texas, and Monmouth College (Illinois). The author of poems, articles and short stories, his work appeared in numerous publications nationwide. Dr. Thorburn was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Baton Rouge, where he sang in the choir, and of Grace Presbyterian Church in Martins Ferry. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army field artillery in World War II, and was also a licensed pilot. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois (McElroy) Thorburn; a brother, David Thorburn; and a sister, Edna Ekey. Surviving are his wife, June C. (Yingling) Thorburn; a son, Alexander M. Thorburn, of St. Louis; a daughter, Melissa R. Thorburn, of Williamsville, N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Elizabeth Ann O'Leary, of Hammond; a brother, Paul N. Thorburn, of Zanesville, Ohio; a sister, Jean E. McKim, of Cambridge, Ohio; a grandson, Richard Sobolewski; and a granddaughter, Alyson O'Leary. Family and friends will be received Friday, Nov. 16, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Heslop Funeral Home, Walnut at Fifth, Martins Ferry. Funeral services will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church, Fourth & Hanover streets, Martins Ferry, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. William O. Webster officiating. Burial follows in Riverview Cemetery, Martins Ferry. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in the Hammond Daily Star: 11/18/2008 THORBURN, JUNE YINGLING A member of Pi Beta Phi and graduate of Ohio State University, June retired as a teacher with the West Virginia Public School System. She was a native of Martins Ferry, Ohio and born to the late William Henry and Edna Latimer Yingling who were lifetime residents of Martins Ferry. June was a resident of Hammond, Louisiana since 1981 where she was dedicated to her volunteer work with North Oaks Medical Center. At the age of 85, she passed away peacefully at her home in Hammond on Sunday, November 16, 2008. Her loving daughter and caretaker, Betsy Ann OšLeary survives her along with a granddaughter, Alyson Rebecca OšLeary, both of Hammond. She leaves behind one sister, Martha Ann Heslop of Charlotte, North Carolina and a sister- in-law, Mary Louise Yingling of Oak Park Heights, Minnesota. June was also preceded in death by her 1st husband, Thomas Joseph OšLeary, 2nd husband, James Alexander Thorburn and brothers, Robert Yingling and Clement Yingling. The family expresses a special "thanks" to Life Source Hospice and in particular, Robin Roberts, Lori Torres and Keyontia Duplessis. They would also like to say "thank you" to Care, Inc. especially Delores Conley. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Fr.
