He was born on March 17, 1929 to Fannie Elizabeth Hayes Varnado and Johnny Charles Varnado of Hammond, Louisiana. He graduated from Hammond Colored High School in 1948. On July 1, 1948, he married the former Bernice Lea Bonds, his high school sweetheart. To this union, eight children were born. Frank also had another child from a previous association. Mr. Varnado was employed by several local businesses before he began his tenure as an Agriculture Specialist with the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LADF). He completed over thirty years of progressive service before retiring from the LADF in 1994. He was a devoted family man who fully enjoyed life. He will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him. Left to celebrate his life and cherish his memory are sons Frank E. Box 553, Hammond, LA 70404. ************************************************************************* Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge) on: 7/29/2011 VARNADO, FREDERICK LALE Frederick Lale Varnado was born Oct. 5, 1927, to Lale Varnado and Minnie D. Barksdale Varnado, in Gulfport, Miss. He passed away on Sunday, July 24, 2011. He grew up in Amite and graduated high school in 1944 as valedictorian of his class. He was given the opportunity to go to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., but chose LSU in Baton Rouge. He married Patsy Jean Williams, of Port Arthur, Texas, in 1946. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served during the latter part of World War II, then called back to duty during the Korean War. He also attended Lamar College in Beaumont and graduated with honors from the University of Texas in Austin with a bachelor of business administration in 1954, where he was also elected member of Beta Gamma Sigma. Fred was hired by the Arthur Andersen CPA firm in Houston as part of the tax and audit team. He accepted a position as cost supervisor for Texas U.S. Chemical and moved to Nederland, Texas, with his wife, Patsy and daughters, Debra Susan and Ashlea Dianne. Daughter Kimberly Anne came along in 1959 to complete the family. He was then hired by Calcasieu Paper Co. in Elizabeth as plant accountant. Celanese Chemical hired him as a division controller in Pampa, Texas, then promoted him to plant manager and transferred him to the plant in Bishop-Kingsville, Texas. From there he was hired by Whittaker Corp. as divisional treasurer and moved to El Campo, Texas, Fred was offered the position as division controller for the lighting division of the New York- based Keene Corp. in Memphis, Tenn. He was later promoted to division president of Keene Corp. heading the Croydon, England; Greeneville, Tenn.; and LaGrange, Ga., installations. Fred retired from industry and returned to the Jefferson County, Texas, area in 1982, where he was a practicing CPA until he retired in 2000. Among his many memberships and awards throughout his life, he was active in the American Legion, the Lions Club, Masonic Lodge No. 3 in Greeneville, and was a member of Methodist Temple in Nederland. He was also a member of Mensa. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Virginia Stout; a nephew, Robert Earl Johnston; and eldest daughter, Debra Susan Farmacka. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Pat Varnado, of Nederland; sister, Margaret Ann Johnston and husband Earl, of Denham Springs; daughters, Ashlea V. Spain, of Milan, Tenn., and Kimberly V. Francom and husband Allen, of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by granddaughters, Sandra Gail Farmacka Leal and husband Marco, of Round Rock, Texas, Ashlea Michelle Robinson and husband William, of Atwood, Tenn.; grandsons, Michael Athan Holloway Jr. and wife Angie, of Oakfield, Tenn., Jeffrey Lale Holloway, of Milan, and Frederick Anthony Mitchell and Sean Allen Mitchell, both of Houston. He is also survived by six great- grandchildren, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Memorial services will be held at Clayton-Thompson Funeral Home in Groves, Texas, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6.
