"SONNY" A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, a retired plant manager for Formosa Plastics with more than 35 years of service and a Baker city councilman, he died at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, at his home. He was 64, a resident of Baker since 1959 and a native of Independence. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict, having served overseas from July 1954 to September 1957. Visiting was at St. Isidore Catholic Church, 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, with wake service at 8 p.m. Visiting at the church, 1 p.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 2 p.m. Monday. Interment in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Survived by his wife, Viviane Verde, Baker; a daughter, Monica M. Verde, Baker, and fiancâ, Gary G. Greenlee, Zachary; a son and daughter-in- law, Randal Lee and Martha Verde, Baker; a niece, Antoinette Reed; five nephews, Pat, Johnny, Steve, Tommy and David Perrone; a granddaughter, Heather Verde; and three stepgrandchildren, D.J., Gabrielle and Quinten Shows. Preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Lena Verde; and a sister, Antoinette Perrone. Pallbearers will be the elected officials of Baker, Mayor Bobby Simpson, Judge John Engelsman, Police Chief Sid Gautreaux, Chief Goose Carroll, Councilman Louis Dunigan, Leroy Davis, Tony Pitts, John Walden, L.C. Richâ and Judge Duke Welch. Honorary pallbearers are Leroy Knaps, Joe Fazzio, A.G. Dayries, Larry Downing and Billy Auccoin. He was elected to the Baker City Council from 1984 to 1988, was council president from 1986 to 1987 and stayed abreast on city activities by attending council meetings from 1988 to 1990. He served a two-year interim term from 1990 to 1992, then was re-elected city council in 1994. He was an advocate of youth activity. He coached for BREC and Little League. He was president of Baker High School Band Boosters for six years and supported school athletics. He was president of "Buffy Incorporated" which was developed to help maintain Baker High School's live mascot. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 4085 and was elected Knight of the Year from 1982 to 1983. He was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church. He was a member of the VFW Jeb Stuart Post No. 4224 and was therecipient of the Outstanding Humanitarian Award in 1982. He was a member of the City of Baker Advisory Board from 1972 to 1978, the City of Baker Planning and Zoning Commission from 1977 to 1984, and chairman from 1980 to 1983. He was treasurer of the Baker Inter-Club Council. He worked with the Chamber of Commerce to improve the City of Baker and bring new business which could provide a boost in employment for the people of the City of Baker. He was elected Outstanding Citizen of the Year for 1997 at the Baker Inter-Club Council meeting on March 18, 1998. He was a member of the Krewe of Mystery and the East Baton Rouge Parish Board of Transportation. He served for more than 20 years on the Capital Transportation Corp. board.
