VERNON DIES OF INJURIES IN CRASH AT FLORA, MISSISSIPPI Brothers and Other Relatives and Friends From Here Attend Last Rights Jesty F. Vernon, brother of Tell Vernon and Clerk of Court Norman P. Vernon of Amite, died late Sunday evening at the Army Camp Base Hospital at Flora, Mississippi, as a result of injuries received in an automobile crash on the highway near the camp a short time before. Mr. Vernon was returning to his home in Brookhaven from a business trip to Jackson, Miss., when the accident occurred. He died a little more than an hour after reaching the camp hospital. He was conscious until the last. Two other men who were with him were seriously injured, but are reported improving. Funeral services for Mr. Vernon were conducted at the late residence Tuesday afternoon, with a large number from here attending the rites. Interment was in the cemetery there. Mr. Vernon was a member of one of Amite's earliest families. He was born here on April 11, 1885. He was the son of the late Dan A. Vernon and Mrs. Clara Weist Vernon. For many years he had been in the lumber business at Brookhaven, and also was a widely known fancier of fine livestock. His herds of thoroughbred horses, milk cows and beef stock, which stared as a hobby, had become noted throughout his section. His country home and stock farm near Brookhaven was one of the showplaces of South Mississippi. He is survived by his widow, who was formerly Miss Eva Alford of Amite; also by four brothers, Norman P. and Tell Vernon of Amite, Charles Vernon of Brookhaven, and Colonel Percy M. VERNON SUCCUMBS MONDAY AFTER BRIEF ILLNESS One of This Sections Oldest Residents, Leaves Descendants of Fifth Generation Mrs. Mary V. Vernon, one of Amite's oldest residents, was claimed by death at her home here Monday morning at 4:15 o'clock. Although in failing health for some time, her illness did not become critical until two days before her passing. Funeral services were held at the late residence at ten o'clock Wednesday morning with a large crowd of old residents of this entire section attending the rites. The Rev. A.A. McKnight, pastor of the Methodist church here, officiated at the service, which was concluded at the Amite Cemetery where interment was made. The Rev. Carter, pastor of the Centenary Methodist church in McComb assisted in the service. Mary Vernon Russell was born in the Russell community east of Arcola on January 23, 1853. She was a daughter of the late William Russell, and Mrs. Faraba Spring Russell, both of whom were members of pioneer families of this section. She was married to Matthew W.W. Vernon, another early pioneer. Mr. Vernon died on January 16, 1887 at the age of 47 years. For more that sixty years Mrs. Vernon had lived in the same house where she passed away. From early girlhood she was a devout and active member of the Methodist church, and contributed generously to its support, but of late years she unable to attend its services. She is survived by one son Cecil Vernon of Amite, three daughters, Mrs. W.P. Robertson and Mrs. Ora Pearce of McComb, and Miss Lelia Vernon of Shreveport. Another son Fred E. Vernon died several years ago. She is also survived by the following grandchildren. VERNON CLAIMED BY DEATH AT FT. BENNING, GEORGIA Interred With Military Rites at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia Lieut. Col. Percy McCay Vernon was claimed by death at the base hospital at Fort Benning, Georgia, following an attack of spinal meningitis. His death, which came at 10 o'clock Sunday night, March 14, was just two weeks after the accidental death of brother Jesty F. Vernon at Brookhaven, Miss. Two of his brothers, N.P. Vernon of Amite, and Charles Vernon of Brookhaven rushed to his bedside upon learning of his serious illness, but arrived at Ft. Benning after his passing. Funeral services were conducted at Ft. Benning, after which his body was taken to Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, where interment was made with military rites. Col. Vernon was a native of Amite, a son of Dan A. Vernon and Mrs. Clara Weist Vernon members of one of Amite's pioneer families. He was born on December 4, 1892. He had been in military service practically all of his life. He was bugle boy for Company I, National Guard, which was organized here. He took Military training at L.S.U., and at the outbreak of World War One enlisted and was sent to the first camp in Louisiana. At the time of his passing he was commanding officer, First Battalion, Student Officers Candidate School at Ft. Benning. His wife is the former Miss Terese Hall, who is a daughter of General Penble Hall and Mrs. Terese Blackburn Hall. Except for about 15 years, which were spent in New Orleans, he had lived in Amite, returning to his home city about a year ago. The son of John J. Vernon and Susan McCall, he was born Nov. 5, 1866, in St. Helena Parish. Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Monday at the McKneely Funeral Home, with the Rev. Howard S.
