She was 83. Survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Calvin B. and Leona Martello Vezinat, Independence; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her husband, P.J. Vezinat. For more information, visit http://www.mckneelys.com. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Hammond Daily Star on: 1/30/2004 VEZINAT, PERSHING JEAN Independence - Retired U.S. Navy Chief Hospital Corpsman Pershing Jean Vezinat, a native of Mamou, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at his home. With 20 years of service in 1959, he was a veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict and accumulated Naval campaign medals along with personal and organizational awards. Once retired from the Navy, he was employed by Penwalt Pharmaceutical Co. as a medical sales consultant until he retired in 1978. He was a member of East Gate Lodge 452, F&AM, 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, Baton Rouge Consistory, Acacia Shrine Temple and served as commander of The Legion of Honor Unit, served as an aide to the Commander International Association Legion of Honor, American Legion Post 38, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 15019, a plank owner of the Naval Memorial Foundation, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Naval Fleet Reserve Association 371, Baton Rouge, and numerous other organizations. He is survived by his wife, Leona P. Vezinat of Independence; two sons, Jean D. Vezinat of Anaheim, Calif., and Calvin B. Vezinat of Independence; one sister, Jerry Guillory of Mamou; six grandchildren and six great-grand- children. He was preceded in death by his parents, Darmas and Lena Vezinat.
