VELVA, N.D. - Olen Marshall Vining Jr., 82, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, at his home. He was a native of Mississippi and a retired chaplain. He grew up in Louisiana and joined the U.S. Army in 1941. After his discharge from the Army, he worked in several different professions before entering Manhattan Bible College and becoming a minister. He preached in several churches in Kansas and Nebraska besides working as a typesetter for newspapers. He worked as a social worker for Rolette County in Rolla, N.D., until 1975. He then moved to Velva where he worked for the National Child Safety Council for 10 years before returning to the ministry full time. His last church was St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Butte, where he served for nine years. He also served as chaplain for the Velva American Legion for more than 20 years. He is survived by three sons, O. Marshall Vining of Fargo, Mark Vining of Devils Lake and Daniel Vining of Rolla; three daughters, Donna Jenson of Velva, Mary Fournier of Las Vegas and Doreen Sullivan of Bloomington, Minn.; two sisters, Annie Fortenberry of Biloxi, Miss., and Inez Perriloux of Ponchatoula; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
