Veteran Louisiana pollster Joe E. Walker, who advised candidates for president, governor, U.S. Senate, Congress and a host of state and local offices, died Thursday in Lafayette after a sudden illness. He was 74. Mr. Walker was the founder and president of Joe Walker Research, one of the South's leading political polling firms. His clients numbered in the hundreds and included the late Hubert H. Humphrey, former Gov. Edwin Edwards, Louisiana Chief Justice Pascal Calogero, former U.S. Sen. J. Bennett Johnston, former Congresswoman Lindy Boggs, former Jefferson Parish DA John Mamoulides, the late Jefferson Sheriff Harry Lee, Mayor Ray Nagin, former Mayors Chep Morrison, Moon Landrieu and Sidney Barthelemy, Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard, former state Senate President Sammy Nunez, and many others across Louisiana's colorful political landscape. In many ways, Mr. Walker was as colorful as some of his clients. His legendary love of politics was matched by his love of life in New Orleans, particularly its food and watering holes, both of which fueled his sometimes fiery analysis of local, state and national politics. He was an avid champion for the principles of political justice and constitutional law. He loved the Constitution of the United States and felt that it was designed to serve humanity at all levels. He was passionate about his beliefs regarding the role and responsibilities of government in society. He also was a mentor to several generations of public officials and students of government and politics. Because of his unique persona, he also made politics and government fun. From the early 1970s until the mid-1990s, Mr. Walker was the on-air pollster and analyst for WDSU-TV in New Orleans, and later at KATC-TV in Lafayette. A native of Auburn, Miss., Mr. Walker was educated in the public schools of New Orleans. He never forgot, however, that as a child he picked cotton on his grandfather's farm in Mississippi during the Great Depression. A veteran of the Korean conflict, Mr. Walker met his wife, the late Theresa Tencza Walker, while both were serving in the U.S. Air Force. Their Air Force duties took them around the globe, but they eventually moved to New Orleans so that Mr. Walker could continue his education. Mr. Walker was a member of the first graduating class at the University of New Orleans, then known as LSUNO, in 1962. He graduated cum laude with a degree in government and later obtained a master's degree in political science at Tulane University. In addition to polling for candidates, private companies and attorneys seeking help with jury selection, Mr. Walker taught political science and constitutional law for four years at both Loyola and Tulane Universities. He also was an annual lecturer at the Loyola Institute of Politics. He had a life-long love for the University of New Orleans. After his graduation, he founded and was the first president of the UNO Alumni Association. In 1996, the university honored him with a "life achievement award" presented by UNO's founding chancellor, the late Dr. Homer Hitt, and then-Chancellor Gregory O'Brien. He was the only UNO graduate to have received the award. Mr. Walker was preceded in death by his mother, Ola Mae Nettles Cheleno; his stepfather, Joseph F. Cheleno; his father, Dan Ray Walker; and his former wife, Theresa Tencza Walker. He is survived by a sister, Joann Cheleno Perrien; a daughter, Valerie Rose Walker, of River Ridge; five sons, Ronald Joseph Walker, of Hammond, Randolph Paul Walker, Richard Eugene Walker and Roger William Walker, of Metairie, and Robert Allen Walker, of Prairieville; and eight grandchildren. A secular memorial celebration of Mr. Walker's life will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the auditorium of the Lindy C. Boggs Conference Center at the UNO Research and Technology Park, 2045 Lakeshore Drive, with a reception immediately following. In lieu of flowers, his family requests that donations be made to the University of New Orleans Foundation, 2021 Lakeshore Drive, Suite 305, New Orleans, LA 70122. ******************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Advocate (Baton Rouge): 11/20/2009 WALKER, JOHN John "Johnny" Walker, a native of Fluker and a resident of Clinton, was born Feb. 10, 1906.
