Lody M. Walker, 38 of Independence, Louisiana., and former Cortland, N.Y. resident, passed away Friday, April 6, 2007, at the North Oaks Hospital in Hammond, Louisiana. She was born December 22, 1968 in Cortland, N.Y., the daughter of Ronald and Penney Burdick Guernsey. Lody was a 1986 graduate of McGraw High School. She then attended Delhi College and received her associate's degree in the field of animal care. Following graduation, Lody was employed by Cornell University, then with Dr. Martin's Veterinary Clinic until her illness prevented her from working. She had a great passion caring for animals in need. Lody then relocated with her husband and daughter to Independence, La. in 2004. She is survived by her husband of nine years, Russell Walker of Independence, La.; daughter, Megan Walker at home, parents, Ronald and Penney Guernsey of Moravia N.Y.; sister, Ronda (George) Walker of Moravia; brother, Jaye (Melissa) Guernsey of Moravia, N.Y.; several aunts, uncles, niece and nephews. Franklinton - Winfred Denman Walker Jr., a 75-year-old retired dairy farmer, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at Terrebonne General Medical Center in Houma. He was a member of Stoney Point Missionary Baptist Church and of the Franklinton Masonic Lodge F & AM. He was a 1950 graduate of Louisiana State University. Survivors include his wife, Goldie Lee Walker of Franklinton; a son, E. Jerome of Franklinton; two daughters, Deborah Lowery of Seminary, Miss., and Beverly Walker of Bourg; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandsons. She was born and raised in Maurepas and graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University with a degree in education. She moved to Varnado and spent more than 25 years teaching with the Bogalusa City School System before retiring. Memorial service will be held Sunday, Dec. 26, at First United Methodist Church of Gonzales, 224 W. Constitution Ave., at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Gary Willis officiating. Fellowship to follow. Committal service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, at Seale Cemetery in Varnado. She is survived by a daughter, Daphne W. Yaun and her husband, H.P. Yaun Sr., of Baton Rouge; son, Joe Walker and his wife, Brenda, of Gonzales; sister, Gloria Holmes, of Hammond; five grandchildren, Rita Yaun, Jodi W. Solar, Cherie W. Tidwell, Marie Turner and Wade M. Walker; and nine great-grandchildren, Nathan and Rebekah Solar, Ashley, Connor and Brittney Turner, Tyler and Taylor Tidwell and Hunter and Chase Walker. She was preceded in death by her husband, A.L. "Snow" Walker; parents, Joe and Rita Jones Sr.; sister, Audrey Jones; and brother, Joe W. Jones Jr. She was former mayor of Varnado and one of the first female mayors in the state of Louisiana. She was a past worthy matron of Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the First United Methodist Church in Gonzales and a former longtime member of the United Methodist Church in Varnado.
