An operating engineer and a resident of Hammond, he died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, at his residence. He was 85, born Saturday, Oct. 25, 1919, in Pumpkin Center, a son of the late Reed Wax and the late Frances Stewart Wax. He joined the U.S. Army as a private first class on Saturday, Nov. 28, 1942, and was discharged on Friday, Jan. 18, 1946. He was a recipient of the American Theater Campaign Medal, the European, African and Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Campaign Medal with one Bronze Star, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He was an ambulance driver, rifleman and pioneer. He served nine months in the European, African, Middle Eastern and Asiatic-Pacific Theater with the 1267th Combat Engineer Battalion. He constructed and repaired roads and bridges, and drove bulldozers, road graders and dump trucks. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Wax, Pumpkin Center; son, Norman D. Wax, Tickfaw; three granddaughters, Bridget Wax Everhart, Donna Ann Wax Giamalva and Desiree Wax Bourgeois, all of Tickfaw; grandson, Norman Travis Wax, Tickfaw; two stepsons, Tully Bankston and Billy Ray Bankston, both of Albany; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Angie Lea Shaffer Wax; parents, Reed and Frances Stewart Wax; and a brother, Clinton Wax.
