WEISS, JOHN T.
Dr. John T. Weiss passed away at age 82 in Alexandria on Saturday, Oct. 17, 
2009. Born on March 16, 1927, to Mary and David Weiss in Lincoln, Ala., he 
had one sibling, Helen Marie. Dr. Weiss was a veteran of World War II, 
serving in the U.S. Navy. He attended the University of Alabama, where he 
obtained his undergraduate degree in 1949. In 1952, he earned his medical 
degree from Tulane University. He then interned at Piedmont Hospital in 
Atlanta. After completing Tulane family practice residency at Lallie Kemp 
Charity Hospital in Independence, Dr. Weiss practiced family medicine in 
Hobart, Ind., for the next 11 years. He then returned to Tulane University 
for a four-year residency in orthopaedics, three years at Charity Hospital 
in New Orleans and one year as Tulane chief resident for both Huey P. Long 
Charity Hospital and the Veterans Hospital, both in Pineville. In 1969, he 
joined the Alexandria Orthopaedic Clinic in Alexandria, where he remained 
in practice specializing in total joint replacement and spine surgery until 
his retirement in 1997. During his lifetime, Dr. Weiss earned many honors, 
including being inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society at the 
University of Alabama as well as receiving and accepting an invitation of 
membership to the Tulane-Caldwell Society. He was a member of the American 
Medical Association, Louisiana State Medical Society, Rapides Parish 
Medical Society, Southern Medical Association, Louisiana Orthopaedic 
Association, Southern Orthopaedic Association, and Tulane Medical Alumni 
Association. He was also a Fellow at the American Academy of Orthopaedic 
Surgeons, Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and 
clinical associate professor at Tulane University. He was a pioneer in 
research on bone-growth stimulators for the lumbar spine and was always an 
innovator in utilizing new techniques in total joint replacement and lumbar 
surgeries. Dr. Weiss is survived by his wife, Sara Thompson Weiss, with 
whom he was happily married to for more than 58 years. He has two children, 
Susan and David; daughter-in-law, Kathy York Weiss; three grandchildren, 
Lauren, John and William Weiss; and future son-in-law, Matthew Anderson. 
Visitation for family and friends will be at the Hixson Brothers Funeral 
Home, Alexandria, on Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. A memorial 
service will be held at Hixson Brothers Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, 
Oct. 21, at 2 p.m. with Dr. Lee Weems officiating. Graveside service on 
Friday, Oct. 23, at the City Cemetery in Lincoln, Ala., where he will rest 
with other family members in the family plot. Pallbearers for Dr. Weiss 
include grandsons, John Weiss, William Weiss, Matthew Anderson, Fred 
Tarver, Clifford DePriest, Dr. Van Davidson, Dr. Cedric Lowrey, Dr. Hal 
Bailey, Col. R.Y. McBurney and Dr. Selcuk Sozen. The family would like to 
extend heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Regency House staff and employees 
as well as Oasis Hospice for their support during this difficult time.
