At the ripe old age of 17, Buddy enlisted in the Louisiana National Guard and served for 3 years. During that time he was hospitalized for minor surgery and fell in love and later married a young student nurse, Edna Louise Skipper. After leaving the Guard, he joined his beloved U.S. Marine Corps in Camp Lejeune, N.C. He served faithfully for an additional 11 years. During that time he achieved the rank of staff sergeant and won numerous awards in rifle and pistol team competitions. After leaving the military and relocating back to Louisiana, he worked as a directional driller in the oil field for several years. Later, he served for more than 10 years in the Livingston Parish Sherriff's Office in the capacity of reserve deputy, followed by service in the Albany Police Department. Buddy leaves behind his children, Beth Edwards and husband Jamie, of Watson, Cindy Welborn and Tina McAlister both, of Albany; grandchildren, Stephanie Welborn, Mark Raborn, Chris Edwards and wife Paige, Carol Ann Edwards, Brittany Richardson and husband Justin, and Brandon McAlister; and two great- grandbabies born this year, Avery Edwards and Kenadie Richardson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Edna Louise, whom he called "Skipper;" parents, Kathryn Lasswell and Buras Welborn; and a sister, Bernice Langston. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral services from the chapel of Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home, west of Hammond, on Friday, Sept. 16, at noon, with visiting hours beginning at 10 a.m. The services will be officiated by the Rev. Charles Reitz. Thompson Funeral Home, Hammond, LA WELBORN, CYNTHIA RENEE Cynthia "Cindy" Renee Welborn, age 53, and a resident of Albany, went to be with her Heavenly Father Monday, April 15, 2013. She was surrounded by her family at North Oaks Medical Center at the time of her passing. Cynthia was a devoted teacher for 21 years in Tangipahoa Parish. Cynthia leaves behind her loving daughter, Stephanie Welborn and future son in-law Christopher Owens of Port Orange, Florida; son, Russell Mark Raborn, Jr. and future daughter in-law Sarah Easley of Albany; grandson, Wyatt Raborn; sisters, Beth Edwards and husband Jamie and Tina McAlister. A resident of Albany and a member of Blood River Baptist Church, Edna was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. With family by her bedside, she passed on to be with her Lord Jesus on Monday, Oct. 6, 2008. The second of eight children, she was born on Sept. 12, 1934, to the late Ruth and Luther D. Skipper Sr. On Oct. 26, 1956, Edna married Austin Earl Welborn and together they had three daughters. Edna attended Northwestern State University in Natchitoches and received her degree in nursing. Years later, she felt the call of teaching and attended Southeastern Louisiana University and obtained her bachelor's degree and master' degree in education. A junior high teacher at Holden High School for 21 years, she touched the hearts and minds of many children. She battled and survived breast cancer 13 years ago and was an inspiration to others fighting the disease. Survived by her devoted husband of 51 years, Austin Earl Welborn, of Albany; daughter, Beth Edwards and husband Jamie, of Watson; daughters, Cynthia Welborn and Tina McAlister, both of Albany; and grandchildren, Stephanie Welborn, of Hammond, Mark Raborn, of Albany, Christopher Edwards and wife Paige, of Shreveport, Carol Ann Edwards, of Watson, Brittany McAlister and Brandon McAlister, both of Albany. She leaves behind brothers, Luther Skipper Jr., Raymond Skipper and Bobby Skipper, along with two sisters, Allene Skipper Hoss and Mary Skipper White; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Preceded in death by her parents, Ruth and Luther Skipper Sr.; sister, Sherrie Skipper Guthrie; and brother, James Skipper. He was 85 and a native of Stringer, Miss. He was retired from military service, having served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean conflict.
