Having been born on the estate, now owned and occupied by Mr. And Mrs. W.E. Mount, on April 5th, 1857, the deceased gentleman claimed sixty-five years, all of which was practically spent in and around Ponchatoula. On one or two occasions the Judge would slip away for a short vacation, but always to return to the place which he loved and knew so well. His sudden and unexpected death was precipitated by an operation which he underwent in New Orleans a few days prior to being called into the great beyond. On Thursday, July 20th, Mr. Wells journeyed to New Orleans to enter the Presbyterian Hospital for the purpose of receiving medical aid, and have an operation performed on the Mastoid Bone. This operation was performed early the following Friday morning, and so successful was it that the patient was allowed to leave the hospital and take up residence with his daughter, Mrs. Pardo of New Orleans. All went well with the late Judge, and everything seemed destined to bring him round to normal health and strength again when, during the early hours of the following Friday, July 28th, he suffered a relapse which resulted in his passing away about five o'clock the same evening. The remains of Ponchatoula's respected citizen were brought up for burial on Saturday afternoon, 4-26 train from New Orleans. On the arrival of No. 6 a very large concourse of people, and retinue of automobiles aligned the I.C. depot. The funeral, in consequence, was very largely attended. The last rites at Wetmore Cemetery were conducted by the Rev. F. B. Hill, Pastor of the Ponchatoula Methodist Church and the Woodmen of the World, of which Judge Wells was one of the eldest members, under the guidance of the Rev. H. T. Comish, Pastor, of the Ponchatoula Baptist Church, also a member of the Woodmen craft. Judge Wells' live in Ponchatoula has always been an active one. Brought up on the old homestead he became one of the most industrious and prosperous farmers this section of the state has ever known. A son of the late Mr. And Mrs. William Wells, he was one of the first farmers to go into the cultivation of strawberries which has become so marked a feature of rural district life. Latterly he became engaged in Notarial (sic) work, and was ever to be found plodding away with clients in matters pertaining to legal custom. For over 20 years he was a Justice of the Peach for the Parish of Tangipahoa, and remained so until that office was abolished on account of a Judgeship being created in the Seventh Ward, and embracing Ponchatoula. While not particularly a leading spirit in political avenues the Judge always shared a unique interest in Ponchatoula's municipal welfare. At local elections he was always engaged in committee work, and in, more or less, a silent way he efectively (sic) did his duty according to the dictates of his own conscience. Rather of a reserved disposition the Judge's private life was spent in home surroundings. Early mornings found him at home, where he remained until the duties of the following day called him to town. Devoted to his wife and family his center of attraction was their welfare, and many acts of neighborly kindness, unknown to his business associates, could be recorded by those who shared in a semi-way the delights of the Judge's home life. The deceased gentleman is survived by his wife Mrs. Wells, three daughters, Mrs. Pardo and Mrs. Ferguson living in New Orleans and Thia, Republic de Honduras, respectfully. Mr. Lawrence Wells, only son, also married, is a resident of the Republic de Honduras, Central America, and is in the employ of the United Fruit Company. The Enterprise takes this opportunity of offering its condolences with the members of the bereaved family. ******************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Ponchatoula Enterprise on: 5/14/1943 WELLS, ELLA OLIVIA Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at three o'clock for Mrs. Ella Olivia Duncan Wells widow of the late Edwin Rusha Wells, who died March 31, at San Diego, California.
