She was 90, born Dec. 5, 1920, in Roseland and a retired beautician. She was a longtime resident of Baker, where she worked side by side with her husband of 65 years, O.G., at West Barber and Beauty Shop. Visiting at Baker Funeral Home, 6401 Groom Road, Baker, on Monday, Feb. 21, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visiting resumes Tuesday, Feb. 22, from 9 a.m. until religious services in the chapel at 11 a.m., conducted by Dr. Dennis Terry and the Rev. Allen Johnson. Interment to follow in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. She is survived by two daughters, Brenda West Birdwell and husband Roy, of Slaughter, and Robbie West Bishop and husband Andy, of Clinton; a son, Gilbert "Earl" West and wife Jackie, of Baton Rouge; eight grandchildren, Joy Birdwell Petty, Kevin Birdwell, Kyle Birdwell, John Bishop II, Ben Bishop, Krystal West Malone, Landon West and Payton West; and eight great-grandchildren, Madison Petty, Grayson Petty, Caleb Birdwell, Jazmine Bishop, Mikelynn Bourgoyne, Gabby Bourgoyne, Ed Bourgoyne Jr. and Stella Malone. She was preceded in death by her husband, O.G. West; parents, Clara Johnson and Thomas Singleton; and six brothers and sisters. Pallbearers will be grandsons. Bertha was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Baker. He was born Sept. 17, 1927 in New Orleans to Harold S. and Ida Baudot West, who preceded him in death. He had been a resident of Hammond since 1970. The beloved husband of Mary Louise West for 56 years, he is survived by a daughter, Carla West Dawsey and husband Thomas; a son, Carey W. West and wife Vicki; three granddaughters, Kathryn and Elise West, and Courtney Dawsey; and a grandson, Ryan Dawsey. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Earl C. West Sr. Harold grew up in Mandeville and was a graduate of St. Paul's School in Covington. In 1947, he received his bachelor's degree from Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond and later retired from SLU as director of administration. Harold was a dedicated parishioner at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Hammond for many years and within that assembly was of Forth Degree in the Knights of Columbus. His memory will be cherished as a loving husband, father and grandfather.
