WHALEN, ANNA GENNARO
Anna died at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 23, 2009 from cerebral hemorrhage at 
West Jefferson Hospital in Marrero. She was a native and resident of 
Independence.  Anna graduated from Independence High School, received 
undergraduate degrees from Tulane University and Touro Infirmary, then a 
Masterıs Degree in Nursing at the University of Mississippi. Anna's career 
started in Panama working for the Federal Government treating canal workers 
for Malaria.  She later taught at Southeastern Louisiana Universityıs School 
of Nursing until her retirement in 1989. Since then, she has worked for the 
Catholic Social Services helping needy and especially older people get back 
into the work force by learning new skills.  Anna was one of the first 
recipients of a Liver Transplant 20 years ago which allowed her 20 more 
years to spend with her family and friends. She was a longtime member of 
Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church in Independence.  She is survived by her 
nephews, Richard, Jimmy, Harry, Michael, Charles, Mark, Thomas, Jr. and 
Gilbert, Jr.; nieces, Annie, Maureen, Kathleen, Mary Ellen, Margaret, 
Keitha, Rita, and Mary Jane.  She is preceded in death by her husband of 36 
years, Richard Whalen; parents, Carlo and Mary Costanza Gennaro; sister, 
Josephine Gennaro; and brother, Sam Gennaro.  Visitation at Mater Dolorosa 
Catholic Church, Independence, from 9 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial 
at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 26, 2009 conducted by Fr. Howard Adkins.
Interment will follow in Colonial Cemetery, Independence. McKneely Funeral

WHALEN, BRIAN KEITH 
Brian Keith Whalen died at 12:55 p.m. Saturday, April 22, 2006, at North
Oaks Medical Center, Hammond. He was 20, a native of Independence and a
resident of Loranger. Visitation at McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, on
Monday, April 24, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 a.m. until
religious service at 1 p.m. Interment in Arcola-Roseland Cemetery, Arcola.
He is survived by his father and stepmother, Michael and Laraine Whalen,
Harden, Texas; mother and stepfather, Barbara and James Strickland,
Loranger; sister, McKenna Whalen, Harden; brother, Edward Whalen, Harden;
stepbrothers and stepsisters, Cameron Hartman, Deer Park, Texas, Heather
Strickland, College Station, Texas, Justin Lacombe, Woodville, W.Va.,
Rebecca Richard, Water Valley, Miss., and Christopher Strickland and wife
Kristy, and Jeremy Strickland, all of Kentwood; stepnieces and stepnephews,
Aleshia, Cristina, Boogie, C.J., Hunter, Eli and Cooper; girlfriend,
Crystal Jones, Loranger; grandmothers, Mary Elizabeth Whalen, Ogdensburg,
N.Y., and Mattie Gibson, Sweetwater; stepgrandfather, Dan Anzalone;

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Harry Whalen and Edward
