She was a native and resident of Independence. Anna graduated from Independence High School, received undergraduate degrees from Tulane University and Touro Infirmary, then a Masterıs Degree in Nursing at the University of Mississippi. Anna's career started in Panama working for the Federal Government treating canal workers for Malaria. She later taught at Southeastern Louisiana Universityıs School of Nursing until her retirement in 1989. Since then, she has worked for the Catholic Social Services helping needy and especially older people get back into the work force by learning new skills. Anna was one of the first recipients of a Liver Transplant 20 years ago which allowed her 20 more years to spend with her family and friends. She was a longtime member of Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church in Independence. She is survived by her nephews, Richard, Jimmy, Harry, Michael, Charles, Mark, Thomas, Jr. and Gilbert, Jr.; nieces, Annie, Maureen, Kathleen, Mary Ellen, Margaret, Keitha, Rita, and Mary Jane. She is preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Richard Whalen; parents, Carlo and Mary Costanza Gennaro; sister, Josephine Gennaro; and brother, Sam Gennaro. Visitation at Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church, Independence, from 9 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 26, 2009 conducted by Fr. Howard Adkins.
