She was a resident of Kentwood and graduated from Kentwood High School in 1932. At a young age, she was given the responsibility of raising her four children alone. At that time, she bought land on which she farmed, raised cows, pigs, and chickens to help support herself and her children. She was a hard worker and enjoyed working outside. She was employed by Brown Morris Grocery and Hardware for more than 30 years. For many years she taught the 4-year-olds at First Baptist Church, where she was an active member. She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Eirick Frey, of Baton Rouge, and Gloria Thompson and husband Charles, of Gonzales; a son, Roger Wheat and wife Joyce, of Zachary; daughter-in-law, JoAnn Savoie Wheat, of Prairieville; two sisters, Othell Williams and husband Joe Williams Jr., of Kentwood, and Erline Allen and husband the Rev. Bill Allen, of Denham Springs; and sisters-in-law, Alpha Stewart, Irene Stewart and Betty Tate. Also grandchildren, Greg Eirick, Sherri Ingram, Tammy Roberts, Teresa Miller, Dereck Wheat, Tiffany Dyason, Misty Whipple and L.J. Bankston; 18 great-grandchildren, two great- great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, D.W. and Etta Wilson Stewart; husband, Curtis D. Wheat; son, Marvin E. Wheat; grandson, Mark Eirick; sister, Lillian Raborn; and brothers, L. D., H.B. and Eldrige Stewart. She was a native of Amite. She is survived by three sons, Floyd Wheat of Boston, Mass., and George Wheat Jr. of Hammond; four daughters, Elizabeth Zanders and Dorothy Burton of Amite; Georgia Wright of Hammond, and Jeanette Wheat of Omaha, Nebraska; five sisters, Josephine Green of Hemphill, Texas, Lilly Mae Triggs and Helen Smith of New Orleans, Dorethea Davis of Hammond, Justine Walker of Baton Rouge; one brother, Leon Leonard Jr. of Independence; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was 66, a resident of Baton Rouge and a native of Kentwood. He attended Spring Creek Elementary School and was a 1957 graduate of Kentwood High. School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963 at Fort Campbell, Ky. He was a member of the Oil, Chemical & Atomic Workers Union. He loved to fish, work on cars and play with his grandchildren. Visiting was at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17.
