She was born Oct. 15, 1919, in the village of Reimers, La., to James Claude Tucker and Minnie Lou Pittman Tucker. Meta spent most of her life in the Hammond, La. area, moving to Monroe in 1999. She retired from Sears after a long career in retail. Meta was a member of Woodland Park Baptist Church in Hammond and Parkview Baptist Church in Monroe. She was a devoted "Maw Maw" and friend to many. She loved to cook and share with others. We'll never forget her fruit cake cookies and chicken and dumplings. She lived her life to the fullest for 93 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Carl White; one brother, Claude Tucker; one sister, Mina Lambert, and one half-brother, Angus Ray Tucker. STAFFORD Birdie D. Stafford White, 88, passed away on Thursday, July 23, 2009. She attended a one-room schoolhouse in Corbin. She graduated as valedictorian of Walker High School in 1938. She earned a bachelor's degree from the LSU Department of Education, with a minor in math and accounting. Birdie was active in Baptist student work. She served as athletic director at the BSU Center. Birdie and Emitte E. White Jr. were co-workers in Baptist Young People's Union activities. They were married following graduation from LSU. Birdie served for many years as the coordinator of the First Baptist Church (FBC) Nursery and as its budget secretary. During World War II, FBC sponsored a Saturday night fellowship for young men stationed at the Harding Field Air Base in which Birdie was active. Birdie and Emitte organized groups of young people, known as the Live Wires, at First Baptist Church Training Union during the middle years of the 20th century and opened their home for food, fun and fellowship of the Live Wires. Birdie was a student worker on the LSU campus and established and administered the Louisiana Merit System Exam prior to the institution of Louisiana State Civil Service. Following graduation in 1942, Birdie went to work at Standard Oil Co. of Louisiana, now ExxonMobil Corp. With the influx of female employees during wartime, she helped to establish the rules and regulations for maternity leave. Birdie was a stay-at-home mother from 1948 to 1964. She retired as department accountant for the Louisiana Higher Education Department in 1984. Birdie worked part-time at the Baton Rouge law offices of Lawrence Uter and Arnold Gibbs and did volunteer work, including income tax preparation with the AARP program for the elderly, from 1992 to 2004. Birdie enjoyed working with the LSU Library's Book Sales Program. Everyone distinguished her as a loving person, mindful of others before herself. In later years, Birdie received many first-place awards at the Williamsburg Retirement Center annual bake-off and enjoyed working with the daylilies in the flower gardens. Birdie was preceded in death by her parents, Emile and Calise Aime Stafford; her son, David Dewitt White; and her husband, Emitte E.
