Rex 16 Aug 2004 Sep 2004 Jerry Nelson Wilcox, Virginia Hoffman 5 Mar 2010 Mar 2010 Jerry Nelson ******************************************************************************** Obituary published in the Hammond Daily Star on: 1/6/2012 WILCOX, JAMES HENRY Long-time Hammond resident and Dean Emeritus of the College of Humanities at Southeastern Louisiana University, James Henry Wilcox died at the age of 95 on January 2, 2012. A native of Bolton, England, Wilcox received his Ph.D. from Florida State University, where he studied composition and conducting with Ernst von Dohnanyi, a renowned Hungarian composer who had known Brahms. Wilcox also had an M. Mus. from Eastman School of Music and an M. Mus. from Northwestern (Illinois). In 1946 Wilcox joined the music faculty at Southeastern Louisiana College (later University). He became head of the music department in 1964. During his tenure as department head, he began plans to enlarge the Pottle Music Building with the addition of the Music Annex. In 1970 he was appointed Dean of the College of Humanities, and during his tenure as dean the Music Annex and the Recital Hall projects were completed. He was named Professor Emeritus of Music. As a professional hornist, Wilcox played with the Milwaukee Symphony, the Baton Rouge Symphony, the New Orleans Summer Pops Orchestra, and the Jackson (Mississippi) Opera. His published musical transcriptions include HaydnŐs "St. Anthony Divertimento" for full band, Andante and Allegro from MozartŐs Horn Quintet for French Horn Solo with Piano Accompaniment, and many others. Besides his articles on music education, he was also the author of a music-theory textbook. Wilcox not only conducted band, choral, and orchestral programs, but also such musicals as Oklahoma! and Carousel. For many years he was the choir director of the First Methodist Church in Hammond, Louisiana. During World War II Wilcox was Chief Warrant officer Band Leader in Greenville, South Carolina, and the China-India-Burma Theater based in Calcutta. While at the Army School of Music, Wilcox performed for President Franklin D. Roosevelt in Washington, DC. Wilcox is survived by his wife, Marie Wiza Wilcox, five children-Joan Tidwell (Arden, NC), Patricia Wilcox (Napa, CA), James P. Wilcox (Baton Rouge, LA), John C. Wilcox (Canfield, OH), and Laurie Wilcox-Meyer (Fairview, NC)-by seven grandchildren--John Viana, Caroline Sandstedt, Colleen Heidenreich, Julia Wilcox, James T. Wilcox, Kit Wilcox Baley, and John Meyer-and by six great-grandchildren-Wylee Viana; Jack, Michael, and Mia Sandstedt; and Isabella and Finn Heidenreich. A memorial service led by Chaplain Ernest W. Ridenhour was held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, January 3, 2012, at Crescent View, in Arden, NC. REX Ponchatoula -- P. Rex Wilcox, 69, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at Landmark Nursing Home, Hammond. Survivors include his wife, Jacqueline Wilcox of Ponchatoula; four daughters, Robin Parker of Chicago, and Dawn Onderdonk, Kim Gregoire and Ginger McKean, all of Ponchatoula; two sons, Mark Leonard and John Onderdonk, both of Ponchatoula; and two sisters, Nova Joiner and Nell Joyner, both of Winnsboro, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Ova Wilcox; sisters, Roxe Ann Wilcox, Martha Ussery and Beth Banks; and one brother, Manuel Wilcox. Visitation will be Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. with a religous service Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Beaty Funeral Home, 816 West Broadway, Winnsboro, Texas. Burial will be at Harmony Cemetery, Hopkins County, Texas. She was 81, born June 5, 1928, in Garrettsville, Ohio. She is survived by her three daughters, Sandy Toney and her husband, Doug, of Franklinton, Candy Frazier, of Amite, and Danna Jo Erwin and her husband, Michael, of Walker; two sons, Dennis Wilcox and his wife, Ruth, and Douglas Wilcox and his wife, Donna, all of Wilmer; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Ethel Knopf, Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and Fran Sotera and her husband, Sam, Mantua, Ohio; two brothers, Buckie Hoffman, Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Donnie Hoffman, Chagrin Falls; brother-in-law, Hank Wilcox, Lake Alfred, Fla.; sister- in-law, Jessie W. Grether, Naples, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Le Roi Wilcox; parents, Clarence and Ethel Hoffman; brother, Harvey Hoffman; son-in-law, Paul Frazier; and two great-grandsons, Chandler and Braedon Toney.
