He was a native of and former resident of Hammond. Survivors include his wife, Lillie Hughes Zaffuto, Fairfield Bay; three sons, Sidney A. and David M. Zaffuto, Chalmette, Terry J. Zaffuto, Loranger; two brothers, Bennie Zaffuto, Metairie, Marion Zaffuto, Albany; two sisters, Jennie Arnone, Hammond, Mary Fulco, Arabi; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Hammond, Friday from 5 p.m. until the funeral at 7 p.m. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Leon Dunn. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to TARC. *************************************************************************** Obituary published in The Hammond Daily Star: 11/29/2009 ZAFFUTO, KATIE MONISTERE Katie Monistere Zaffuto, 93 years old of Hammond, Louisiana, died Friday, November 27, 2009, in Belle Maison Nursing Home, where she resided for 3 years. She was born on Monday, February 28, 1916, in Hammond, Louisiana, daughter of the late Sam and Josephine Calabrese Monistere. Mrs. Zaffuto was a farmer, a business store owner and an avid gardener. Surviving are 12 nieces and nephews and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. Her husband, Joseph Zaffuto and four brothers, Chris, Dominick, Albert and Frank Monistere, preceded her in death. Friends will be received Sunday, November 29, 2009, at the Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Hammond, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Sunday, November 29, 2009, and on Monday after 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, at 10 a.m., with Fr. Ed Everitt, O. P., Celebrant. Interment will follow in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Hammond. Chalmette - Sidney Angelo Zaffuto Sr., 50, was killed in the line of duty Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, during a bank robbery of the Iberia Bank in Algiers. An officer with the New Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office, he is survived by his wife, Shirley Zaffuto of Chalmette; one son, Sidney Angelo Zaffuto Jr. of Birmingham, Ala.; his mother, Pamela Serpas Graves and stepfather, Elvin Graves; two brothers, David Zaffuto of Chalmette and Terry J. Zaffuto Sr. of Loranger; one sister, Linda Zaffuto Kelly of Loranger; and two grandchildren. His father, Angelo Zaffuto, preceded him in death.
