E. and Alva Smith Notes and Remarks which may be of assistance--prepared in late August 1989. It is generally accepted that there are no recorded names and dates of persons buried in Routhwood Cemetery, Newellton, Louisiana, (Old Newellton Cemetery). The above list of names and dates have been prepared from still existing grave markers, most to be found on the south side and center section of the cemetery. It is known that many other graves are here, unmarked and unknown. It is also known that in 1927 when this area was flooded by the Mississippi overflow, that many were already buried in this cemetery. Existing iron fence posts, holding an old vine entangled wire lawn fence surrounds three sides of this cemetery and are marked A S & W Co. Patented February 7, 1922. A long time resident thinks that the cemetery was started by a Mr. Routh. Mr. Charles J. Rozier was in charge of the cemetery for many years, before his death in 1957, when his wife Mrs. Lela M. Rozier and later her sister, Mrs. Gladys M. P. Oglesby kept up the vigil of maintenance through volunteer contributions. Their nephew, has been the conscient- ious care taker since the early 1960's, many times removing entire uprooted trees. Mr. Cooper is definitely sure that one unmarked grave is that of his great uncle Louis Cagle. Mr. Cagle was an uncle to Mrs. Rozier, Mrs. Oglesby and Mrs. Mary Davis Cooper. The Routhwood Cemetery is located. 6 miles from the center of New- ellton, (from the traffic light) south on Hwy. 605 near the banks of Lake St. Joseph. A fence separates a cemetery, still being used by the Afro-Americans of the community, on the south side. A concrete marker designed in the shape of a cross held the letters M. R. In past years this marker was observed as resting in the ground up to the horizontal bar. It was recently found broken and lying in undergrowth near the northwest corner of the cemetery. A brick over ground vault can also be remembered that has over the years deteriorated and is no longer there. If you have loved ones here, perhaps you are helping to preserve this part of the history of our parish. Indeed, just as the pioneers who settled our eastern seaboard, there are those who have pioneered our part of this great state and country.
