The Tensas Gazette is the second oldest newspaper in Louisiana and one of the oldest in the United States. Except for the Civil War years, the newspaper has been in continuous publication since it was established. There has been one name change. After the Civil War the paper fell into the hands of "carpetbaggers," and the name was changed to the North Louisiana Journal. The paper was published under that masthead until 1886, when it was renamed The Tensas Gazette. One of the newspaper's editors, Josiah P. Scott, left an enviable record. He held the title of editor and publisher for fifty-nine years, from 1894 to 1953, and he never missed an issue, even during the three big floods that happened during his tenure in 1912, 1916 and 1927.
