Eberhardt Wuth Annoucement: We congratulate the parents of this vicinity, who have children to educate, upon the prospect of having Capt. T. Jeff Adams to take charge of the St. Joseph School #1, October 5th. Capt. Adams is an accom- plished teacher, having graduated from the University of Virginia, and having been a professor at Oakland College, Miss for some years after the war. The school board, in making this appointment, have consulted the wishes of the parents of the children in town and given general satisfaction by their action. Articles of interest: We are glad to learn that our friends of Lake St. Joseph are making such improvements in their midst. Dr. D. S. Newell has sold twenty acres of his land, part of Verona Plantation, fronting on Lake St. Joseph, to his neighbors, Capt. JDS Newell and E. H. Newell, and they propose building residences on the land thus purchased. They contemplate having quite a village, as they talk of a butcher shop, carpenter shop, drug store, etc.being put up. Esquire Octo Routh, J.P. of the 2d ward, will have his office for the dispension of justice, there also. Who knows but that in a few years the Town of Verona will be asking for an act of incorporation at the hands of the Legislature. We trust they will, so they are content for St. Joseph to remain the seat of Empire. (Submitter's note: This must be the beginning of what later became the Town of Newellton.) Moses Dreyfus has opened a store at Avondale, and we suppose will pitch in for a share of patronage with his usual pluck and energy. Nearly everyone who has been away this summer have returned to their labors. Whenever cotton comes into town business looks up, and every- body seems on the alert for the money to be realized out of it. Mr. Frank Watson has enjoyed the distinction of having shipped the first bale of cotton from an overflowed plantation in Tensas this year, as he sent forward a bale on the Natchez, Wednesday from Duck Pond Plantation. It speaks well for our enterprising young planter, this being his first year as an agriculturist.
