Newell Jr. Robert Yates "Gandy" Newell, Jr., 101, of HC 78, Box 100, Augusta, West Virginia, died Wednesday, December 8, 1999, in Winchester Medical Center. Mr. Newell was born November 27, 1898, in Newellton, Louisiana, the son of Robert Yates and Bessie Young Newell. He was a marine engineer with the U. S. Government Maritime Commission and retired in 1963 after 24 years. He had worked as a sugar chemist in Cuba from 1920 to 1930. He was a former chairman of the trial Board of the Maritime Commission. He attended Louisiana State University and George Washington University. He was an Army veteran of World War I, with the rank of First Lieutenant. Surviving with his wife, are a son, Robert Yates Newell, III of Reston; three stepchildren, David Gainer of Springfield, Joseph Gainer of Falls Church, and Louisa Gainer Bridges of Winchester; a brother, Edward Dunbar Newell of Cape Coral, Florida; 10 grandchildren, seven step grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren. A daughter, Robin Mason Newell Byrnes, is deceased. A memorial service was at 2:30 p. m. Sunday at St. Paul's on the Hill Episcopal Church with the Reverend Michael Mohn officiating. Burial was in Legion Memorial Cemetery, in Newellton, Louisiana. Omps Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
