They request that a sealed packet believed to contain his last will be opened and admitted to probate. ======================== 7 August 1873 Order for an inventory. Several persons testified to the validity of the will. ======================== 22 August 1873 Inventory taken by Peter Berger and Stephen Minor. 1) Land on the right descending bank of Bayou Terrebonne a short distance below Houma, measuring 2 arpents front by depth of 10 arpents, bounded above by the land of Joachim Bergeron and below by the land of J. B. Winder. 2) A Sugar plantation about 7 miles below Houma known as Plantation of Semple and Shields on both sides of the bayou. The first tract is bounded above by the land of J. Gueno and below on the left bank by land of E. Guidry and on the right bank by land of J. R. Saboulard, with buildings and improvements such as sugar house, sugar mill, engine, and cabins, etc. $12,500.00 ========================= 13 Jan 1879 The petition of Eliza Davis Semple represents that a portion of the Semple and Shields plantation has been sold, the first property was appraised at an excessive amount and Eliza Davis Semple requests a new inventory. Heir s listed: 1) the petitioner, Eliza Davis Semple 2) Mrs. Emily Newell, daughter of the deceased, of age and resident of Terrebonne Parish 3) children of Mrs. Sarah Rockwood, a predeceased daughter of the deceased Robert, of age a resident of Galveston, Texas, Carrie Rockwood, of age resident of Terrebonne Parish, Thomas Rockwood, a minor of Terrebonne Parish. 4) children of Lydia Paul, deceased daughter of Joseph Semple Albert Paul Rosa Paul, both minors and residents of Terrebonne Parish 5) Mrs. Mary Carradine, a daughter of Joseph Semple and her children Mary Carrodine James A. Carrodine, Samuel Carrodine and Emma Carradine all of age and residing in Natchez, Mississippi. ========================== 9 March 1880 The Petition of Benjamin D. Chase of Adams Co., Mississippi, respectfully shows that 6 Mar. 1880 he was appointed guardian of his minor child, Eva Semple Chase, by the Chancellor of the 12th District of Mississippi in and for Adams County, and he requests the court recognize him as the guardian of Eva Chase. [His wife, Eva Semple, is deceased.] ========================== 10 March 1880 The court recognized Benjamin Chase as the guardian of his minor daughter, Eva. Herman Lowenstein was appointed under tutor. ========================== 10 March 1880 The heirs of Joseph Semple are listed again: Mrs. Mary Carradine Baker, James Carradine, Alex. H. Carradine, Samuel Carradine and Emma Carradine. A partition of the land is requested. ========================== 10 March 1880 A Family meeting was ordered. The minors Rosa Eva Paul and Albert Cage Paul were represented by Isidore Duthu, T. M. Price, E. A. Hepler, H. F. Belanger and John A . Hubbard. They own land 8 miles below Houma, the property has now been subdivided into 39 lots and is appraised for $47,081.50. ========================== 6 January 1883 The petition of John R. Bisland says Mrs. Eliza Davis, widow of Joseph Semple, died 4 January 1883. Her heirs are: 1) Mrs. Emily Newell 2) the children of Sarah Rockwood Robert Rockwood of Galveston, Texas Carrie Rockwood and Thomas Rockwood both of Terrebonne Parish 3) the children of Eva Chase Benjamin Chase and Eva Chase, both minors residing in Natchez, Mississippi 4) the children of Lydia Paul Rosa Paul and Albert Cage Paul of Houma. =========================== 25 January 1883 Inventory of Eliza Davis Semple.
