The Houma Daily Courier and The Terrebonne Press Houma, LA, Oct. 8, 1972, Sunday, Section E FRENCH PROGRAM STARTS MISSION IN MONTEGUT By Rev. Benton Billion (Bellon?) The late Rev. Lawrence Thibodeaux was the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Thibodaux, LA. He conducted French services on the radio. As a result of the radio services, Mrs. Louis Charpentier of Montegut heard him and invited him to her home to discuss the Bible. He then began coming to Montegut every other Friday night, where he held services in Mrs. Charpentier's home. Brother Thibodeaux saw a need for a mission in Montegut. He and members of his religious community bought and built a mission on the Pointe-aux-Chene road in 1954. At that time the mission was named Charpentier Baptist Mission. Brother Thibodeaux moved from Thibodaux to Houma, where he became pastor of the Christ Baptist Church. Charpentier Mission was then turned over to the First Baptist Church of Houma. For approximately seven years, the mission was pastured by seminary students from the theological seminary in New Orleans. These preachers came to Montegut only on weekends. They served the mission until the end of 1962. Rev. Benton Bellon became pastor of the mission on January 1, 1963, when he became the first full time pastor of the mission. The congregation remained on the Pointe-aux-Chene road until 1967, when they purchased some property in Montegut and built their present mission. The name of the mission was then changed from Charpentier Baptist Mission to Montegut Baptist Mission.
