The church was built as a family church in 1959 by the Reverend Freddie Moses. Due to friction in his former church, Rev. Moses decided to build a church "just for me and my family." Although, "the church is open to all," its membership is predominantly of the Moses family. Royal Picou, according to Mr. Moses, donated money and gave Rev. Moses a job which aided in financing the project. Rev. Moses also said that his children decided to go to work to help him pay for the church. Day by day, the church was built. The lumber was donated by Herman Moses, Rev. Moses youngest brother, when he decided not to build the house he had started. With the help of his family and friends, Reverend Freddie Moses built Moses Israel Baptist Church. The church has survived many hurricanes with only minor damage.
