JENNIFER GIRARD Jennifer E. Girard has graduated from the Army Reserve Officer training Corps Camp Challenge at Fort Knox, Ky. Camp Challenge is a five-week carnp designed to qualify college students who have not taken ROT Ccourses on campus to enter the Advanced Senior ROTC program. The daughter of James E. Girard of Cut Off and of Nancy Scruggs of Cotal, Calif, Girard is a 1994 high school graduate. SAM DEGENERES Second Lt. Samuel L.H. deGeneres completed 62 weeks of intensive pilot training in theEuro-NATO Joint jet Pilot Training Program at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. He received his silver Air Force wings along with 28 other officers on Oct. 20 in ceremonies at Sheppard. His wings were pinned on by his father, Brig. Gen. Samuel G. deGeneres, who received his wings at Webb Air Force Base in May 1970. Lt deGeneres entered training in August 1999 where he trained in the T-37 Tweet and the supersonic T-38 Talon. Upon completion of F-15 fighter training in Klamath Falls, Ore., he and his wife, the former Robyn Smarada of Baton Rouge, will return to Belle Chasse where he will fly the F-15 for the Louisiana Air National Guard 159th Fighter Wing, 122nd Fighter Squadron. TAMIKA STOVE PV2 Tamika N. Stove, a 2000 graduate of Terrebonne High School, was temporarily working with recruiters of the Army recruiting station in Houma. Stove was stationed in Houma from Nov. 30 to Dec. 19. Since completing basic training, Stove attended 10 weeks of advanced individual training. Her Army occupational specialty is ammunition specialist. Stove enlisted in the Army in July 2000. She is the daughter of Gwendolyn M. Stove of Houma. JEREMY SKIDMORE Marine Corps Pvt. Jeremy J. Skidmore completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. Skidmore and fellow recruits ended the training phase with The Crucible, a 54-hour team effort, problem-solving evolution that culminated in a ceremony in which the recruits were presented the Marine Corps Emblem, and were addressed as Marines for the first time since boot camp began. Skidmore is a 1998 graduate of Thibodaux High School. He is the son of Lucille T. and Richard T. Skidmore of Thibodaux. PATRICK DICK Air Force Airman Patrick E. The cadet was selected on the basis of comprehensive tests, high school scholastic achievement and extra-curricular activities. PAUL BERGERON Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Paul J. Bergeron is participating in a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf while assigned to Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 7, embarked aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Harry S. Truman, home ported in Norfolk, Va. While on deployment the squadron visited Souda Bay, Crete, where the crew had the opportunity to shop, sightsee and enjoy local culture and cuisine. The squadron, home based at Naval Air Station Jacksonille, Fla., flies the SH-60F and HH-60H helicopters, twin turbine powered aircraft with a maxi-mum gross weight of more than 21,000 pounds. The SH-6OFs primary mission is antisubmarine warfare and the HH-60H's primary missions are combat search and rescue and naval-special warfare support. MICHAEL NEVILS Navy Fireman Michael P. Nevils is engaged in a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf while assigned to th e aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman, home ported in Norfolk, Va. While on deployment, crew members from Nevils' ship participate in damage control olympics, a competition designed to train the crew to properly handle a crisis at sea. The ship also visited Souda Bay, Crete, where crew had the opportunity to shop, sightsee and enjoy the local culture and cuisine. Carriers like USS Harry S, Truman are deployed around the world to maintain U.S. presence and provide rapid response in times of crisis. They serve as a visible deterrent to would-be aggressors and are equipped with the most versatile and powerful weapons and aircraft available. Jennings is engaged in a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf while assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Nassau, home ported in Norfolk, Va. During the deployment, the ship participated in "Spanish Phiblex," an exercise consisting of a series of amphibious landings with Spanish naval forces. USS Nassau also participated in a live-fire training exercise in Capo Teulada, Sardinia.. Additionally, the ship visited cities in Italy, Malta and Spain where crew had the opportunity to shop, sight see and enjoy the local culture and cuisine. USS Nassau supports amphibious operations using landing craft air cushions, which are specially-designed hovercraft that travel above land and sea surfaces and deliver vehicles and equipment. The ship also has conventional landing craft and helicopters embarked, and is equipped with medical facilities staffed by Navy doctors, dentists, nurses and corpsmen. Jennings' wife, Candice, is the daughter of Peggy J. and William W. Warren of Montegut. ========================= JUNE 10, 2001 ========================= TODD HUBBELL Todd F. Hubbell has graduated from the Air National Guard Academy of Military Science and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air National Guard, a separate component part of the Department of the Air Force. The curriculum at the academy consisted of a six-week, in-resident course that instructed students in six major areas of study, which included military training, professional development, communicative skills, leader-ship and management, defense studies, and physical training. After graduation, the lieutenant either attends further career development training or returns to his/her respective state's unit of assignment. Hubbell graduated in 1990 from Thibodaux High School, and received a bachelor's degree in 1998 from Nicholls State University, Thibodaux. He is the son of Francis J. and Loretta C. Ludwig is halfway through a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf while assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Nassau, home ported in Norfolk, Va. During the deployment, the ship participated in "Spanish Phiblex,", an exercise consisting of a series of amphibious landings with Spanish naval forces. USS Nassau also participated in a live-fire training exercise in Capo Teulada, Sardinia. Additionally, the ship visited cities in Italy, Malta and Spain where crew had the opportunity to shop, sight see and enjoy the local culture and cuisine. USS Nassau supports amphibious operations using landing craft air cushions, which are specially designed Hovercraft that travel above land and sea surfaces and deliver vehicles and equipment. Amedee will attend follow-on training at the Nuclear Power School, and receive more detailed instruction on principles of science and engineering, construction, and operation and maintenance of naval nuclear propulsion plants. Nevils recently returned from a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf while assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman, home ported in Norfolk, Va. While operating in the Persian Gulf, the Truman Battle Group enforced United Nations sanctions against Iraq by diverting 22 vessels with more than $5 million of susp ected contra-band cargo. Nevils participated in numerous international exercises, including"Arabian Gauntlet," an 11-nation exercise involving more than 20 ships. The Sailors also worked to strengthen relationships and improve interoperability with the many other countries they encountered during the deployment. The ship also visited the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Greece and Turkey, where he had the opportunity to shop, sightsee and enjoy the local culture and cuisine. This was the maiden deployment for USS Harry S. Truman. The ship was commissioned July 25, 1998, and competed its final pre-deployment certification exercise in October,2000. Carriers like USS Harry S. Truman are deployed around the world to maintain U. S. presence and provide rapid response in times of crisis. They serveas a highly visible deterrent to would-be aggressors, and are equipped with the most versatile and powerful weapons and aircraft available.
