Daigle Harold J. Savoie Montegut Navy Man is Killed in Explosion Harold J. Savoie, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elias Savoie of Montegut was killed in the "external explosion" which cut a five foot hole in the forward fire room of the US Destroyer Barton in Korean waters last week. Savoie's father said he received a telegram Tuesday informing him that his son's body had been found along with the bodies of Navy men previously reported missing. Savoie said the defense department had sent him a telegram last week telling him his son was missing. The defense department announced last Wednesday night (September 17) that five men were missing and seven others were injured in an "external explosion" which occurred on Barton off the east coast of Korea on Monday, September 15. The explosion cut a hole five feet in diameter in the forward fire room of the 2000 ton vessel, the announcement said. The Navy said the destroyer may have hit a mine. The Barton commanded by Comdr. Harvey B. Seim of Bridgeport, Conn. proceeded to a Japanese port under her own power after the explosion. FIVE YEARS OF SERVICE Young Savoie had been in the Navy nearly five years, having re-enlisted after completing his enlistment. His father said the Navy had informed them the body would be sent home for burial if they wished and that they had already requested that the body be shipped here. The Montegut serviceman attended Mac Dunell school here prior to enlisting in the Navy. Besides his parents he is survived by three brothers, Clifton, Louis and Erin Savoie, all of Montegut; and seven sisters, Mrs. Jim LeBouef, Mrs. Junius Prosper, Mrs. Alvin Prosper, and Misses Lela, Thelma, Molly and Barbara Jane Savoie. Note: See Nov. 7, 1952 Joseph Savoie for obit. ==============================================================================
