Daigle Norris Savoie 1 Violent Death Recorded in Parish Over Holiday Weekend Only one violent death was recorded in Terrebonne Parish up until the news deadline for the Press Monday afternoon for the long July 4 holiday weekend. Eleven year old, Norris Savoie, son of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Savoie Jr. of Ellendale, was drowned late last Friday. (skipped paragraph not pertaining to Norris) At a coroners hearing Saturday morning, the mother of the drowning victim related that the child disappeared from their home shortly after noon Friday. She stated that she did not become alarmed until late in the afternoon when he failed to return, as he sometimes stayed out until around dusk, playing with children on the plantation. However, when he did not return after dark, Mrs. Savoie and her husband began a search for the child who was said to have been mentally retarded. The search continued until midnight and was resumed at daybreak Saturday morning. He was found floating in a pit in front of the home of Andrew McCollam at Ellendale. The mother of the victim first discovered the body. She said that as she approached the pit, she saw something that looked like a body and that she went to the home of a Negro nearby and got the colored man to go to the pit with her. The colored man saw that it was Mrs. Savoie's son. The Coroner's jury returned a verdict that the child accidentally drowned while at play. A Negro woman, Susie Griffin, told the jury that she saw the child pass her house shortly after noon Friday. That is believed to be the last time he was seen alive. Funeral services for the young victim were conducted Saturday afternoon from the First National Funeral Home to St. Mary's Catholic church in Raceland with interment in St. Mary Cemetery. It was the second death in the Savoie family in two weeks. A seven months old daughter, Debora, was buried June 23. In addition to his parents, Norris is survived by a brother, Harvey, four sisters, Jean, Violet, Gayle and Frances. ===========================================================================
