Adenin Rodrigue

Adenin Joseph Rodrigue, a native and resident of Chackbay, died at 4:30 a.m., 
Tuesday, Feb. 28. He was 87. Visitation at Thibodaux Funeral Home begins at 2 
p.m. today and will continue until 11 p.m., resuming tomorrow, from 8 a.m.  
until funeral time. Funeral services were scheduled for 11 a.m., March 2 at Our 
Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church in Chackbay, followed by interment in the 
church cemetery.

He is survived by one foster son, Anicet Rodrigue Sr.; three daughters, Mrs. 
Ernest (Lorina) Rodrigue, Mrs. Clifton (Theresa) Rodrigue and Mrs. Lovencie 
(Beulah) Rodrigue; one brother, Whitney Rodrigue; six grandchildren and four 
great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Celestine Legendre Rodrigue; two brothers, 
Gilvert and Adler Rodrigue and three sisters, Mrs. Nicholas Boudreaux, Mrs. 
Willie Dominque and Mrs. Urbin Rodrigue.

Sgt. Clarence Chiasson

Sgt. Clarence (T-Can) Chiasson, a Louisiana State Trooper, died at 7:30 p.m. 
Wednesday, March 1 at the age of 44. Visitation at Landry Funeral Home in 
Thibodaux begins at 2:30 p.m. and will continue until 11 p.m., resuming 
tomorrow at 8 a.m.  until funeral time. Funeral services were scheduled for 
9:30 a.m., Friday, March 3 at the funeral home followed by religious services 
at 10 a.m.  at St. Genevieve Catholic Church. Interment will take place in St. 
Joseph Cemetery. 

He was the husband of Audrey Mae Breaux Chiasson. He is also survived by his 
mother, Jeanne Chiasson; four daughters, Janet, Rhonda, Connie and Cindy 
Chiasson; three brothers, Jimmy, Raymond and Eddie Chiasson and one sister, 
Rita Huot.

He is preceded in death by his father, Clarence Chiasson.

Ardis Fanguy

Ardis Joseph Fanguy, a retired school bus driver and a resident of Rt. 3 Box 
138, died Wednesday, March 1 at Terrebonne General Hospital. He was 57. 
Visitation at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Chauvin is now in progress and 
will be continuing until funeral time. A rosary will be said at 8 p.m. tonight. 
Funeral services were scheduled for 10 a.m.  Friday, March 3, at Our Lady of 
Prompt Succor Catholic Church, followed by interment in St. Elie Cemetery in 
Little Caillou.

He was the husband of Elodie Hutchinson Fanguy. He is also survived by one son, 
Donald Fanguy of Little Caillou; one daughter Mrs. Philip (Nancy) Naquin of 
Little Caillou; four brothers, Celestin (Boy), and Reginald Fanguy, both of 
Chauvin, Jesse Fanguy of Little Caillou and Dudley Fanguy of Bourg; three 
sisters, Mrs. Della Theriot of Houma and Mrs. Lenis Authement and Mrs. Julius 
Martin, both of Chauvin and one granddaughter, Melodie Naquin.

Gunshot Wound Fatal to Fanguy

Ardis Fanguy, 58, of Rt. 3 Box 138, Houma, was killed by a gunshot wound when a 
pistol which he had taken out of his bedroom apparently misfired and hit him in 
the head.

According to reports in the Terrebonne Parish Sheriffâs Office, Fanguy was 
annoyed by cats in the area and had decided to take a rifle to shoot the cats 
in his back yeard but at the last minute decided to use a two barrel 32 caliber 
pistol. 

The reports said that Fanguyâs daughter, Mrs. Philip Naquin, was in the kitchen 
around 9 a.m.  when Fanguy passed through with the gun and mentioned to her 
that something was burning and said that he was on his way to shoot the cats.

The reports also said that Mrs. Naquin pleaded with her father not to shoot the 
cats because her daughter loved them. They also said that Fanguy continued 
through the kitchen into the den and opened the door to ___ unreadable.

At that point, according to the reports, Mrs. Naquin heard a shot and ran 
toward the patio in time to see her father __ down.

Fanguy was pronounced dead at Terrebonne General Hospital at 11:53 a.m.  
Wednesday.

Emanuel Gibson

Emanuel Gibson, a native and resident of Gibson, died at 12:12 a.m.  Saturday, 
Feb. 25, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in New Orleans. He was 62. Wake services 
are scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday, March 3, at Triumph Baptist Church. Funeral 
services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 4, at the church with the 
Rev. James Williams officiating, followed by interment in Rose Hill Cemetery. 

He is the father of George, Grayland, Cassadel and Emanuel Gibson Jr.; the 
brother of Dave and Warner Green and Mrs. Albertha Patterson and Lawless 
Gibson. 

He is preceded in death by one son, Renauld Gibson; two brothers, Chester and 
Lester Green and three sisters, Mrs. Flossie Givens, Mrs. Savannah George and 
Mrs. Hanna Finley.

Gustave Rodrigue, died at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, March 1 at the age of 89. 
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m.  today at Our Lady of Prompt Succor 
Catholic Church in Chackbay, followed by interment in the church cemetery.

He is survived by one son, Stanley Rodrigue; two grandchildren and three great 
grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by Georgina Rodrigue.

Mrs. Beulah Rooks, a native and resident of Morgan City died Monday, Feb. 27 at 
Lakewood Hospital. She was 68. Wake and funeral services are scheduled for 8:30 
p.m. tonight at Pilgrim Grove Baptist Church in Morgan City. __ __ __ will be 
conducted at 10 a.m.  Friday, March 3, at the church with the Rev. J. W. Young 
officiating. Interment will take place in Greenwood Cemetery. 

She was the wife of Rev. Earl Rooks. She is also survived by two sons, Thomas 
Rooks of Morgan City and Earl Rooks Jr. of Alexandria and one daughter, Mrs. 
Delores Johnson of Morgan City.

Benjamin Thomas Sr., the brother of Terrebonne Parish Police Jury member, Isaac 
Thomas, died at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26 at the age of 40.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy for 20 years and was a resident of 2903 E. 
Main St. 

Wake and funeral services are scheduled for 9 p.m. Friday, March 3, at the New 
Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church with the Rev. K. Simmons officiating. Dismissal 
services will be conducted at 11 a.m.  Saturday at the church, followed by 
interment in the New Zion Cemetery.

He was the husband of Mary Lee Lyons Thomas. He is also survived by one son, 
Benjamin Thomas Jr. of Fort Bragg; two daughters, Mrs. Jennifer Thomas Moses

Clay Louis Matherne, a resident of Bayou Blue, died Friday, March 3 at 11:25 
p.m. He was 86. Visitation at McCleary Funeral Home began 5 p.m. Saturday, and 
will continue until funeral time. Funeral services were scheduled for 10 a.m.  
Monday at Bayou Blue Methodist Church. Interment will take place at Matherne 
Cemetery in Bayou Blue.

He was the husband of Mrs. Emily DeRoche Matherne. He is also survived by three 
sons; Percy, Roy and Cleveland Matherne, of Bayou Blue; one daughter, Vest 
Matherne Blanchard, Bayou Blue. He is also survived by three brothers, J.J. 
Matherne Sr., Bourg; Clarence Matherne, Houma; Lovincy Matherne, Bayou Blue; 
two sisters, Ada Matherne, Houma; and Ann Arceneaux, Bourg; 15 grandchildren, 
11 great grandchildren and one great great grandchildren.

Fire Fatal to Two Houma Men Friday

Flames engulfed a wooden home at 2606 Bryant St. killing two Houma men around 
11:00 p.m. Friday.

Dead are James Allen Neville, 42, of 2606 Bryant St. and Austin Francis Clay 
Jr., 42, who police say resides at 1008 Honduras St. 

Fireman found the residence totally engulfed in flames upon arrival, according 
to the report. The victims were found in the kitchen area when firefighters 
entered the building to bring the fire under control. The cause of the fire 
which __ __ __ front room, remains undetermined pending further investigation.

District Chief Ernest Miller said there will probably be an investigation by 
the state fire marshal.

Because the bodies were burned beyond recognition, they were taken to the 
morgue for autopsies. No foul play has been indicated.

Funeral services for Neville were set for Tuesday at 11 a.m.  at the Community 
funeral home chapel followed by burial at St. Johnâs Cemetery. The wake is 
scheduled for Monday from 9pm to midnight. 

The Houma native is survived by an ex-wife, the former Betty Diggs of Gray; one 
son, Cornell of Houma; one daughter, Cora Lee of Houma; one brother, Cleveland 
Neville of New Orleans; five sisters, Leola Lyons, Cora Neville, Eartha 
Neville, Virgie Williams and Ora Ponds, all of Houma.

Further details on Mr. Clay were unavailable at press time. Rev. James LaGarde, 
a friend of the family, will officiate at services.

A Houma man died early Friday morning when the truck he was driving struck the 
rear end of another vehicle on Interstate Highway 10, just east of Jennings.

Neal Vernon Pepper, 22, of 200 St. Paul St. died due to chest and head 
injuries, according to state police.

Pepper is survived by __ Sharon Hayden his __, Preston Pepper; his mother, 
Evelyn Stoltz __. He is also survived by __ brothers, Kirk, Brian and __; as

She was the wife of the late Johnny Cooks. She is survived by one daughter, 
Mrs. Myrtle B Campbell; one foster daughter, Mrs. Nida L. Campbell, both of 
Houma; two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Bush Matthews and Mrs. Hellen Bush Dinwiddle 
of Los Angeles, Calif., two brothers, Rev. John E. Bush of Los Angeles, Calif., 
and Westley Robinson of New Orleans; two grandsons, Joseph Lagarde III and 
Purnell Lagarde of Houma; and six great grandchildren, Darryl, Debra, David and 
Darlene Lagarde, Joseph Lagarde IV, and Tony Netter.

She is preceded in death by her parents Johnny Davis Sr. and Eliza Morgan 
Davis; one brother, Johnny Davis Jr.; and two sisters, Mrs. Isabella Davis 
Keller, and Mrs. Alma Davis McDonald.

She was a member of the Courts of Calanthe, the Community social Aid and the 
Golden Social Aid societies.

Hospital in New Orleans. She was 57. 

Funeral services were conducted today at 10:30 a.m. at Falgout Funeral Home in 
Raceland, followed by religious services at 11 a.m. at St. Hilary Catholic 
Church in Mathews. Interment took place in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in 
Raceland.

She is survived by one son, Herbert J. Fremin Jr.; one daughter, Mrs. Calvin 
Thibodeaux; three brothers, Johnny, Eno and Murphy Gautreaux; two sisters, Mrs. 
Harry Roberts and Mrs. Lena Chiasson and seven grandchildren.

Lillian Alice Hepler, a native of Taft, La., and resident of Houma, died Mon., 
March 6 at Maranatha Care Center at 4:30 a.m. She was 88. She was a telephone 
operator from May 21, 1919 until her retirement on June 22, 1939, and she was a 
member of the Telephone Co. Pioneers.

Visitation will be from today from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m. and on Tuesday from 8 
a.m.  until funeral time. Funeral services will be conducted from Chauvin 
Funeral Home Chapel at 10 a.m.  Tuesday, March 7. Interment will take place in 
Magnolia Cemetery.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Celeste Guidry and Thomas Jefferson 
Hepler; by four brothers, Thomas Walter, Wallace Andre, Richard Allen and 
Joseph Duncan Hepler; by four sisters, Mrs. Georgia Valerie Kelly, Mrs. Eudora

Harry Watkins, a native of Houma and one time a resident of Chicago, Ill., died

Music Co. and Dupontâs Department Store during his stay in Houma.

The fatality victim of a Tuesday morning head-on collision near Amelia in 
Assumption Parish has been identified as Rebecca Landis, 20, Durham, N.C.

She was killed when the car she was driving crossed the center line and 
collided with a car driven by Cleo Coleman, 49, Napoleonville, according to 
state police. Coleman was treated at Lakewood Hospital in Morgan City and 
released.

Houman Dies After Forklift Accident (Picture of Curtis Ruffin)

A 20 year old Houma man was killed yesterday when he apparently drove a 
forklift into an unsafe position on a boat ramp and the heavy equiptment fell 
into a slip off the Intracoastal Canal. 

Curtis Ruffin of 226-B Senator Circle was found dead shortly after 5:30 p.m. 
near the Gulf Coast Pre-Mix Plant.

Company employees first discovered the forklift missing at approximately 4:30 
p.m. They knew at the time that Ruffin had been using the machinery, but were 
unable to find him. The sheriffâs department was called, but officers left the 
scene after discovering no trace of the forklift.

At 5:36 p.m. the sheriffâs office was called again, according to the report. 
The forklift had been found in the water, but Ruffin was still not located. 
After the equipment was raised with a crane, Ruffin was not on the forklift.

His body was later found near where the machinery had landed in the water. 
Officers assumed that he had backed the forklift onto the raised boat ramp. A 
pin in the winch holding the ramp; was broken from the weight of the 6,000 
pound forklift, according to the report.

The cause of death has not yet been determined.

Frank Russ, a native of North Carolina and a resident of Bayou Blue, died at

and Frank Russ Jr.; two daughters, Mrs. Lawrence (Joyce) Eschete and Mrs.

A Chauvin man was killed this morning when he turned his car into the path of a 
small pick up truck, according to witnesses to the accident. 

At approximately, 7 a.m. today, Morris W. Savoie, 70, of Pellegrin St. in 
Chauvin was driving north on Louisiana 56 when he made a turn into the parking 
lot of a convenience store located next to Progressive Bank. He apparently did 
not see the small truck heading south on the same road and crossed into its

Bayley LeCompte

Bayley J. LeCompte, 80, a native of Bourg and a long time Baytown resident, 
died Tuesday in a Baytown hospital. Services were held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at 
the St. Joseph Catholic Church with Msgr. Joseph OâSullivan officiating. 

LeCompte, of 4803 Pebble Brooks, came to Baytown in 1919 and was retired from 
Baytown Exxon Refinery. He was a Navy veteran of World War I and was a member 
of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Worbie LeCompte of Baytown; two brothers, R.J. 
LeCompte of Baytown and C.A. LeCompte of Houma; six sisters, Mrs. L.C. Jacobs 
of New Orleans, Mrs. M.J. Oubre, Mrs. R.K. Sheffield and Mrs. Dudley Patterson 
of Houma, and Misses Anna and Florence LeCompte of Bourg; one sister-in-law, 
Mrs. Muriel Owens of Houston, Texas; two step daughters, Mrs. Barbara 
Fitzpatrick of Aberdeen, Mississippi, and Mrs. Anna Grauer of Huntington 
Valley, Penn.; a brother-in-law, Jack Defee and several nieces and nephews.

A rosary was recited for LeCompte, a native of Bourg, at 8 p.m. Wednesday at 
Paul U. Lee Funeral Home chapel. Pall Bearers were Gordon and Jim LeCompte, 
Hank Ingram, Dudley Patterson, Donny Swoboda and Joe McFarland. Burial was in 
West Columbia Cemetery in West Columbia.

The native and resident of Bayou Gauche was the son of Jessie Dunn Sr. and 
Helen Dufrene. He is also survived by his grandmother, Orelia Dunn; his 
maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Dufrene; a brother, Jessie Jr.; and 
two sisters, Tammy and Jody.

He is preceded in death by his grandfather, Mike Dunn.

Melanie Ponvelle

Mrs. Melanie Pitre Ponvelle, 78, a native of Chackbay and resident of 
Thibodaux, died early today at Terrebonne General Hospital. Visitation will be 
from 5 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m.  Saturday at Thibodaux Funeral Home. Services 
will be 10 a.m.  Saturday at St. Joseph Cathedral in Thibodaux.

Mrs. Ponvelle is survived by two sons, Lydre and George Ponvelle; three 
daughters, Mrs. Georgena Ordoyne, Mrs. Morris Ordoyne and Mrs. Irene Ordoyne; 
three brothers, Hector, Oban and Wilfred Pitre; five sisters, Mrs. Emma 
Ordoyne, Mrs. Marie Boudreaux, Mrs. Clarence Benoit, Mrs. Nidas Thibodeaux and 
Mrs. Ladie Gaudet; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Ponvelle is preceded in death by her husband, Orestile Ponvelle, and her 
brother Eddie Pitre. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Thibodaux.
