In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family. =============================================================== TERREBONNE PARISH HOUMA, LA THE COURIER JAN.8, 1998 SOIL CONSERVATIONIST PESNELL DIES AT 84 Raymond Cecil Pesnell, a "pioneer" soil conservationist who helped farmers in Terrebonne Parish for more than 20 years, died Monday of cancer. He was 84. Pesnell, a native of Monroe and resident of Houma, worked for the Lafourche-Terrebonne Soil and Water Conservation District for 24 years before retiring in 1974. "He was a pioneer in this area on soil conservation," said Alfred Cooley, a former county agent for the LSU Cooperative Externsion Service. "He was well-respected by all the sugar cane farmers." Friends said Pesnell was a quiet listener who worked well with the farmers in the area. "When (Pesnell) spoke, you could tell he knew what he was talking about," Cooley said. Godfrey Bourgeois, a former engineer in Pesnell's office, said Pesnell was a no-nonsense man dedicated to his work. "He was a man where you knew where you stood with him," Bourgeoi s said. An avid reader, Pesnell was known as a religious man who liked to study genealogy. He was a member of Mulberry Baptist Church. A grave-side service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Ruston. "I remember how much he loved the Lord, and what a wonderful and dedicated Christian he was," said Evelyn Head, a long-time friend of more than 30 years. "He loved people." Keyser was president of Northwestern State University from 1954 to 1966, and she was an active member of numerous Natchitoches civic and cultural organizations.
