TERREBONNE PARISH HOUMA, LA THE COURIER, MAY 20, 1998 FORMER COURT CLERK DIES Ambroise H. Landry, Lafourche Parish's clerk of court for more than 30 years, died this morning. He was 82. "We are all going to miss him," said Vernon Rodrigue, the current clertk of court and Landry's nephew. "Even through he had been retired for 14 years, you could still get information from him." Landry won his first election as clerk of court in 1952 and served until 1984. During his tenure, he was the first Louisiana clerk of court to microfilm all documents for preserfvation purposes and to have all the French acts translated into English. "He was a wonderful person," Rodrigue said. "I never saw him raise his voice at anyone." He served as the president of the Louisiana Clerks of Courts Association from 1977 to 1978. In 1970s, he helped found the International Association of Clerks, Recorders, Election Officials and Treasurers in disseminate information about the clerks and other election officials. He also served as the first president. His involvement with the Clerk of Court's Office continued up until last year. "He was the 1996-1997 retired clerk member of the board of trustees of the Louisiana Clerks of Court Association," Rodrigue said. "He was representing the retired clerks and employees." Landry did not just serve the community as the clerk of court, but in a variety of other positions. Possibly the most important to the entire parish was his membership in the Friends of the Library. "He had a vision for this parish that was way before his time.," said Shannon Chiasson, 1996-1007 president of the Friends of the Library. "Th e thing that struck me the most about him was he was honest and a true gentleman." As a member of the Friends of the library, Landry was instrumental in acquiring the Percy Lobdell Building to house the Thibodaux branch of the Lafourche Parish Library. "He was one of the original people who helped purchase the building." Chiasson said. "He volunteered his time, his legal experience and his negotiating skills." Landry's community involvement also included co-founding the North Thibodaux Fire Co. 1 in 1949 and attending the 1973 Constitution Convention. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and the Thibodaux High Band Boosters' Club. During World War II, he started a monthly newspaper, The Town Talk. The paper was mailed to all servicemen from Thibodaux, A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the St. Joseph Co- Cathedral in Thibodaux. She served as physician for a diabetic and hemophilia camp while completing her post-graduate work. At the time of her death, Dr. Scurto was serving as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics of at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. TERREBONNE PARISH HOUMA, LA THE COURIER, MAY 24, 1998 LOCAL JOURNALIST LOSES CANCER BATTLE Bryanna Latoof Green, a journalist recognized for her work through the recent cr eation oa a special scholarship in her honor by the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times newspaper, passed away Saturday at her home in Houma after a battle with breast cancer. Green, 39, worked professionally under the bylines Bryanna St. Pierre and then Bryanna Latoof after her December 1982 graduation with honors from Nicholls State University. She began her journalism career at The Caily Comet in Thibodaux in December 1982. The majority of her career was with the St. Petersburg Times, beginning as a correspondent in early 1986. Last March, The Times scholarship committee crfeated the Bryanna Latoof Scholarship. Publisher Andy Barnes said the scholarship will be the newspaper's "premium" scholarship award, carry $1,000 stipend above the newspaper's usual $2,500 awards. The scholarship will be awarded for at least 10 years. "In her career at the Times, Bryanna has stood for what is best in journalism: compas sion, integrity and a touch of humor," said Carol Marbin Miller, a news reporter at the Times. "She was a tough reporter here, but with an enduring human side. Though her stories were often hardhitting, they were also consistently uplifting." Green twice won the St. Petersburg Times' in-house writing competition, judged by news staffers at the 300,000-daily circulation, Pulitzer Prize winning newspaper, including the first such award at the newspaper in September 1994. Other honors included the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group's Chairman's Award in 1983 for work at The Daily Comet. She was named the Outstanding Communications Graduate in 1982 at Nicholls and received the inaugural Clarence Doucet Reporting Award at Nicholls in 1982. Green had been on leave from her job since her diagnosis with cancer in March 1995 while pregnant with her second child.
