TERREBONNE PARISH HOUMA, LA THE COURIER, AUGUST 5, 1998 LONGTIME RED CROSS VOLUNTEER DIES AT 75 Members of the local American Red Cross chapter and other community groups are mourning the death of one of their longtime volunteers. Sybil Prorche Martinez, 75, died at 5 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998. A native of Bayou Goula, she lived in Bayou Dularge and Houma for the past 50 years. She and her late husband, Clifford Warren Martinez, raised their six children in Terrebonne Parish. Mrs. Martinez was know n for her work with the Red Cross, especially for manning hurricane shelters during her more than 50 years of volunteering. She was also a longtime member of theRed Cross' board of directors and twice served as its president. "Sybil was a wonderful friend of mine. She was a very reliable and loyal person, very compassionate," said Pat Kraemer, director of the Red Cross' Terrebonne Parish chapter. "She did almost everything for Red Cross. She had a great compassion for people. She just w anted to help." The national American Red Cross recognized Mrs. Martinez for her service in 1993, when it presented her with the prestigious Cynthia Wedel award during a ceremony in Nashville, Tenn. Mrs. Martinez taught in public and private schools in Terrebonne Parish for more than 30 years. Twice, she was named Teacher of the Year. She was charter member of the Arts and Humanities Council. She was on the board of directors and served as secretary of the council. She also was active in the American Cancer Soci ety, Beta Sigma Phi and the Rehired, Teachers Association. He was a charter member of the Bourg Volunteer Fire Company, a member of the Bouquet- Breaux Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7755, a member of Louisiana Lions Eye Foundation and a member of the Bourg Lions Club where he served as president and earned the Melvin Jones Fellow Award.
