TERREBONNE PARISH HOUMA, LA THE COURIER, SEPTEMBER 4, 1998 HUNT DOWNER'S STEPFATHER DIES FRANK A. FABREGAS The stepfather of Speaker of the House Hunt Downer passed away Thursday after a long illness. Frank A. Fabregas, 82, was a retired compressor operator for Texaco. The Houma native and Terrebonne High School graduate also fought in the South Pacific during World War II and received a Purple Heart award for injuries sustained in combat. Rep. Downer, D-Houma, said Friday morning that Fabregas raised him and his two brothers like they were his own. "He had a job raising three boys. He taught us that self discipline and respect for others was paramount of your individual success and happiness," Downer said. Downer said Fabregas retired from Texaco about 2o years ago and his main hobby since leaving the oilfields was tending to his cattle. "He had about 30 head of Angus cattle on a little 30-acre farm. He was 82 years old and he still put in a hard day's work every day. That was very important to him," Downer said. "He died doing what he loved to do." Downer said that on the day Fabregas died, he had to bury one of his animals. "A baby calf died during birth yesterday. THERIOT DIES OF LUNG CANCER Retired Houma doctor Eugene The riot died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, at his home after fighting lung cancer for six months. He was 74. The Paincourtville native moved to Houma in 1956 with his family and practiced medicine for four years. Theriot would eventually move away but returned to Houma three more times before deciding to settle her in 1997. "He was loved by so many people," said Margaret Elizabeth Theriot, his surviving daughter. "He was a strong personality and came across that way to a lot of people but he was also a loving, caring person. I was always able to turn to him for any kind of problem. And you were able to turn to him as a friend. He was amazing like that." Theriot started out his adult life as a dive bomber pilot with the U. S. Marine Corps 1st Air Wing during World War II. Theriot was awarded nine combat decorations, including three Distinguished Flying Crosses. When Theriot left the Marines in 1946, he was a first lieutenant. He moved to New Orleans and attended Loyola University from 1946 through 1949. Next, Theriot went to the LSU School of Medicine and completed an internship at Mercy Hospital in 1953. He performed a one-year residency in general surgery at Charity Hospital. Theriot moved back to Houma in 1966. He worked as an OB/GYN while becoming a member of the Houma Medical and Surgical Center. In 1969, he served as chief of staff at Terrebonne General Medical Center and in 1972 became chief of obstetrics and gynecological service at the hospital. From 1975-1977 he was the director of the department of anesthesiology at Terrebonne General Medical Center after spending several years at Charity Hospital. From 1977-1986, he was director of the department of anesthesiology at The Woman's Hospital in Baton Rouge. In 1 986, Theriot and his family moved back to Houma. Theriot and his wife Jerry worked together in Chauvin as doctor and registered nurse in a family medicine practice from 1986-1992. Theriot also served as medical director for the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex in Houma. After settling in Houma in 1997, a retired Theriot had time to enjoy golfing, fishing, gardening, hunting and construction. He also had a passion for photography and built his own darkrooms. He earned several first and second place awards in photography and art contests. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jerry Dalhart Theriot; three sons, Edward, Eugene and Michael Theriot; one daughter, Margaret Elizabet Theriot; three daughters-in-law, Sandra Dawn, Marianne Wagenecht and Anita Carroizales Theriot; one brother, William H. Theriot; two sisters, Eliska Schaff and Eunice Clause; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Claiborne Joseph and Aloysia Landry Theriot; and one daughter, Suzanne Marie Theriot.
