A Bourg native and Houma resident, he was 93 years old. "I'll bet he brought into the world half the people who live here," said Susan Laperouse, who was his neighbor for 22 years. A graduate of Louisiana State University and Tulane University School of Medicine, where he graduated in 1928, Ellender served his internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, followed by a year's service at St Francis Sanitarium in Monroe. He took up practice in Houma in 1931. "He was a true Southern gentleman," said former Courier publisher Ray Dill. "He was a man who played a very important part in Terrebonne medical history." On Aug. 5, 1935 he and Willard Ellender, M.D., opened the 27-bed Ellender Memorial Hospital at 221 East Park Ave., a former residence, which U.S. Sen. Allen J. Ellender had enlarged and remodeled for the project. The senator was the doctor's first cousin. Although Eliender Memorial was a private institution, the use of hospital facilities was extended to all doctors practicing in Houma. Ellender is remembered in those early years of practice as a dedicated, hard working doctor. In one instance, he made three 20-mile trips in one 24-hour period to check on a patient in the Ile de Jean Charles community, which at the time, included boat transportation. Other note worthy accomplishments of the doctor included his involvement in the care of 29 survivors of an American tanker torpedoed off the coast of Grand Ilse by Germans in May 1942, and the care of victims of the col lapsed Park Theatre ceiling on April 19, 1949. After 19 years, Ellender Memorial was superseded by Terrebonne General Hospital, in 1954. The original Terrebonne General Hospital is located on property originally owned by the Ellender cousins, Willard and S. Ernest on which they planned to build their own hospital. However, when they learned of the parish's plans to construct a public hospital, they made the property available to the parish. In January 1967, Ellender was named as a co-recipient of The Courier's Most Useful Citizen award, along with his cousin, Willard, recognizing the founding work of the hospital and its staff. In 1978, Tulane Medical School awarded him a 50-year diploma. The Louisiana State Medical Society paid special tribute to him at banquet in New Orleans. He was a member of the Terrebonne Parish Medical Society, Louisiana State Medical Society, American Medical Association, International College of Surgeons, Third District Medical Association, American Association of Councils of Medical Staffs of Private Hospitals, Tulane Medical Alumni Association, Louisiana Medical Political Action Committee, and the Phi Rho Sigma Medical Fraternity. He retired in 1984 after 56 years of practice. "His life revolved around God, his family and his practice," said his son, S.E. Ellender Jr.,D. D.S. "He was going for his daily, walks up till he was 90." Visitation begins at the St. Francis de Sales Cathedral Tuesday at 8 a.m. and continues until the funeral time.
