TERREBONNE PARISH HOUMA, LA THE COURIER, JANUARY 3, 1999 TECHNICAL SCHOOL PIONEER DIES AT 81 Luther Eldredge Fletcher, the man who ran the Louisiana Technical College in Houma for 16 years and continued to mow its lawn every week until he was 79, died Saturday morning at age 81. Friends and colleagues say they'll remember him as a dedicated educator, committed to changing the image of vocational education. "He was a very effective administrator, very dedicated to what he was doing," said Travis Lavigne, the man who eventually took Fletcher's job as director of the school. Prior to that Lavigne worked as a teacher there under Fletcher for some 16 years. Lavigne said Fletcher was largely responsible for renovating and expanding the school from just five programs to about a dozen - doing whatever needed to be done along the way, from changing light bulbs to fixing a roof. Aside from his involvement with the technical school, Fletcher worked for a time for the state Department of Education and as a teacher, guidance counselor and later assistant principal at South Terrebonne High School. That's where M.C. Perry met the man, some 30 years ago. "I simply remember him as a man who did so much for so many, literally thousands of students," Perry said. "He was a dear friend and I'll miss him teriibly." Perry said the two things that stood out about his friend were "his dedication to work and that he was always ready with a good joke."
