DORA FERBER Dora Ferber, the last surviving member of a Terrebonne Parish family that operated a men and women's clothing store in historic downtown Houma for more than 45 years, died Tuesday. She was 91. Ferber and her brothers Leo and Nathan opened Palais Royale, a women's shoes and clothing store in 1934. Six years later, the siblings opened "The Men's Shop clothing store. Both stores were located in the same bu ilding on Main Street -the building where Castalano's Deli now sits. The Ferber family - including parents Samuel Ferber and Augusta Kliendorf Ferber - arrived in Houma in the early 1930s from Lake Charles. The Ferbers were originally from New Orleans. Ferber sold the clothing stores to separate buyers in 1980. After the sales, Ferber retired and spent most of her time helping others and her family, according to family friend Ray Dill. The Ferber family was philanthropic without people knowing," Dill said Wednesday morning. According to Dill, when the MacDonell United Methodist Children Services home was struck by fire in the late 1940s, Ferber and her family outfitted all the children from the home that lost clothes in the blaze. The Ferbers always took the children from MacDonell to the Shrine Circus every year," Dill said. Dora Ferber is also responsible for purchasing all the benches in the Main Street Memorial Park downtown. Tommy Cobb, a family friend and neighbor, said Wednesday he remembered a story about the Ferber family crossing paths with Sen. Allen Ellender in the 1950s. According to Cobb, the Ferbers rented a house on Barrow Street when they first moved to Houma. Years later, the land-lord of the building - Ellender - told the family it had to move out because he was going to se ll the property. The Ferbers wound up buying the house from Ellender and relocating the residence to Belanger Street. Dora Ferber was Jewish, but Dill said she donated to churches of all denominations. Cobb said that Monsignor Joseph Latino has offered St. Frances de Sales Cathedral as a location for Ferber's burial services, which will be performed by Rabbi Edward Cohn of Temple Sinai in New Orleans. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m.to funeral time Thursday at St.Francis de Sales Cathedral.
