Perry, a well-known media, political and advertising consultant in the Houma area, died Monday, Nov. 29, 1999, after a fight with cancer. He was 67. Perry wrote for many years on special assignment for The Courier. He also was a host of a popular classical music program and covered spot news for local radio. For 19 years, he broadcast live election returns for several radio stations in the Houma-Thibodaux area. In 1983, Perry and his family opened Perry Flying Center, a fixed-base operation at the Harry P. Williams Airport in Patterson. Perry was a licensed pilot for more than 30 ye ars. He served as president of the flying company until his retirement at the end of 1998. However, he remained active in the business as chairman of the board. His son, Ken, now runs the company. "While all of us are deeply saddened by my father's passing, I know of no better legacy than to continue to operate Perry Flying Center for many years to come," Ken Perry said. Perry was born in Port Allen on Sept. 13, 1932. After graduating from high school in Iota, he enlisted in the Louisiana National Guard. With the onset of the Korean War, he transferred to the U.S. Air Force. He was assigned to a B-29 Superfortress bomber. After the military, Perry returned to college and became a high school teacher. He taught in schools in Louisiana and Virginia. He was a lifetime certified teacher and guidance counselor in both states. Perry also was a consultant for a major school textbook publisher. He traveled the southwestern United States and Guam, lecturing educators on English, literature, composition and the social sciences.
