He was 68. Known to his friends as "Jeff," the Gray resident helped in the 1960s to establish what would become known as Vandebilt Catholic High School. He was a fixture at the school, serving a term as its board president in 1983 and in other school-related organizations, including the Terrier Club and the Band Boosters. In the business world, Laque worked at Terrebonne Ford in Houma for almost 40 years. He held several positions there, including sales manager and customer relations coordinator. But it was his work with the Catholic church and the Knights of Columbus that friends remember most. "He always has been extremely devoted and convinced of the value of a Catholic education," said the Rev. Larry Cavell of the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux and a longtime friend of Laque. Laque's support of Vandebilt began in the 1950s, when he worked at numerous fund-rai sers for St. Francis de Sales Boys' School. When supporters decided to build a new high school on Hollywood Road, friends say, Laque was there. They recall him donating time at many events since the high school's dedication in the spring of 1966. He also was a big supporter of the school's athletic and band programs. One year, he attended all 3 3 Vandebilt basketball games - home and away. In 1997, he was inducted into the Vandebilt Hall of Fame. "The man would give you the shirt off his back," Cavell said. A parishioner of St. Francis de Sales, Laque received the Bishop's Medal of outstanding church work. In 1991, Laque was given the most prestigious honor for a lay Catholic, when Pope John Paul II named him to the Order of St. Gregory the Great. At the time, he was one of only 150 Catholics in Louisiana and one of 2,000 in the world to receive the honor. He was devoted to the Knights of Columbus, where he served in several district and state positions. In 1992, he became only the fourth layman to be given the organization's Past State Deputy Award. Laque was born in Boutte on Nov. 9, 1931. He graduated from E.D. White Catholic School, Thibodaux College and St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas. Visitation will be from 5 to 10 p.m. today at Chauvin Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. to funeral time Thursday at St. Francis de Sales Cathedral.
