April 26, 2000 Ronald Gautreaux [Photo] Ronald Joseph "Gutch" Gautreaux -- vice-president of the Houma Rotary Club, a local architect and devoted family man -- died Tuesday afternoon after a brief battle with cancer. He was 49. Friends re- member the Labadieville native as a loving and giving person - a man always willing to put his own needs aside in order to serve others. He worked for the past 12 years as project manager for longtime friend Jude Laperouse, owner of Laperouse Metal Works. When asked if the two were friends as well as co-workers, Laperouse said yes. "He was absolutely my best friend," he said. Laperouse not only served as project manager, he also worked for the firm as vice-president - a fact that means Gautreaux's absence will leave a big hole in Laperouse's personal and professional life. Lisa Ferrell, president of the Houma Rotary Club and a friend of Gautreaux's for the past eight years, said his presence would be missed. "He was a Rotarian in every sense of the word," she said. "He was fair and honest in all his dealings and always willing to do whatever he could to help." Gautreaux was the current Rotary Club vice-president and had planned to assume the presidency when Ferrell's term expires. He enjoyed his work with that organization, she said, and was honored for his work in 1998, the year he was selected Rotarian of the Year. He also was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was successful, Laperouse said, because he was "a worker bee who got things done." "He was committed to service -- this man was committed to making this nation a better place," he explained. In addition to work with the local Rotary Club, Gautreaux was also active with professional architects' associations. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects, Louisiana Association of Architects and a member and past presi dent of the Coastal Chapter. Gautreaux also was a member of the National Roofing Contractors Association and chairman of that group's Codes and Standards Committee. He was also a member of the American Standards of Testing Materials. Laperouse said Gautreaux was very successful in his profession and was held in high esteem by his peers. The Thibodaux resident also believed in serving the community -- he was a volunteer fireman at Lafourche Fire District No. 1 and secretary at Station No. 4. "He was so appreciative of what he had in life," Laperouse said. "He wanted to give something back." He also had a deep faith in God, friends said. Gautreaux was a parishioner and Eucharistic Minister of St. Charles Borromeo Church, a fourth degree member of the Reverend Kermit Trahan Assembly and member of the Reverend Tjebbe Bekema Knights of Columbus. Gautreaux, the father of three, had successfully overcome an earlier bout with colon cancer, friends said, but doctors discovered that the cancer had returned late last year after he complained of pain in his knee. Visitation will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday and from 8 a.m. to funeral time Friday at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church with burial in the church cemetery.
