May 3, 2000 Thelma Lucile Bickham Ellender [Photo] Thelma Lucile Bickham Ellender, a homemaker and retired schoolteacher, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000 at home in Houma. She was 96. Mrs. Ellender was born in West Feliciana Parish and graduated from South Western. While teaching at Houma High School, she met and later married Claude Ellender, an attorney, in 1928 and lived in Houma thereafter. She was a founding member of the Terrebonne Parish Library Board, Terrebonne Garden and Bird Club, Houma Country Club and UMW of the First United Methodist Church. She was active in many local charities and programs. According to her family she was an extremely generous and positive person who brought out the best in everyone. She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Ellender; her parents, Thomas DeWitt and Sallie Harvey Bickham; three sisters, Effie Bickham Todd, Edith Bickham Daniel and Hattie Grace Bickham; and four brothers, Ewell DeWitt, Charles Elvin, Leslie Oliver and Tal madge Dennis Bickham. Those who knew Garnet Bonilla, 59, of Chauvin, remember her as a friendly loving person who loved doing and being the best at what she did. " She was an outstanding individual that put her customers needs and concerns utmost in her business," said Courier Circulation Director Wade Peak. " She will truly be missed by this department as a carrier and a friend." \line Bonilla had been an independent carrier distributor for The Courier for 14 years in the Chauvin area. She is survived by her husband, William " Bill" Picou of Houma; one daughter, Jean Crowley of Schriever; two grandchildren, Michelle Ferreria and Rita Crowley; and two great-grandchildren, Fantasia Parfait and Dylan Ferreria. She was preceded in death by her parents, Anatole and Edna Gautreaux Hebert; and two brothers, Allen and Lloyd Hebert. She was a home economist for Louisiana State University Extension Service, a sewing specialist for Bernina of America and was a retired home economist for Lafourche Parish, Assumption Parish and Terrebonne Parish.
