July 28, 2000 William Rexford " Rex" Wells [Photo] Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Samart Funeral Home for William Rexford " Rex" Wells, a World War II combat veteran, longtime employee of the Post Office and a noted Houma fisherman and outdoorsman. Mr. Wells, 79, died on Monday, July 17, 2000 of a heat stroke while mowing the grass at his small home on Duet Street. " Sad as it is, Dad died doing for himself, which is what he always insisted on," said Ken Wells, one of his five surviving sons. " In that way, Rex died with his boots on." Mr. Wells had lived alone for the past five years since he lost his wife, Bonnie Toups Wells, a Thibodaux native, to the effects of a stroke. Mr. Wells' life was an embodiment of many of those of his generation. He w as born an only child on Dec. 3, 1920 in a dirt-floor shack near the little farming town of Des Arc, Ark. His father, William Henry Wells, was a jack-of-all-trades\emdash carpenter, hunting guide, commercial fisherman, bootlegger\emdash who eventually built a thriving fishing camp on the banks of the famed White River. But in 1929, the Great Depression struck and the camp, dependent on business from wealthy Little Rock sportsmen, folded. The Wellses barely hung on, scraping by on odd jobs and fish and game they caught themselves. In 1936, growing desperate, they moved to Louisiana seeking work on the advice of a relative who had moved there previously. They lived for a year in New Orleans, but as country folk, the big city didn' t suit them and they found their way the next year to Houma. Rex, as h e was known, recalled arriving in Houma when its population sign read 9,160 people, downtown had one bank, many people still spoke Cajun French and the surrounding woods, fields, swamps and marshes were free of posted signs open to all who wanted to hunt and fish them. " I' d moved from the swamps in Arkansas to swamps I even liked better," Mr. Wells, an inveterate hunter and fisherman, was always fond of saying. Mr. Wells entered Terrebonne High School and helped his parents run a series of small ventures downtown, including a restaurant, a boarding house and a shooting gallery. He graduated in June of 1939 and immediately joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He so impressed his superior officers at boot camp that he was offered a place at the U.S. Naval Academy, which he reluctantly turned down\emdash Annapolis was, after all, an engineering school at its heart and he believed he lacked the necessary math skills. Instead he was accepted into Sea School, the elite training academy for spit-and-polish enlisted men and, before the start of World War II, sailed halfway around the world as a captain' s aide, visiting exotic ports like Samoa, Pago Pago, Fiji and Australia. With the outbreak of hostilities, however, Mr. Wells' life was anything but a scenic cruise. His ship narrowly escaped the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and he was a gunner onboard a Naval destroyer that lost a chunk of its bow at the Battle of the Coral Sea. Later, as a Marine Corps Infantryman, he charged ashore on the bloody beaches of Guam and helped mop up entrenched Japanese forces on Guadalcanal. He was also the Marine who sounded the alarm aboard the U.S.S. Chicago on May 31, 1942 when three Japanese midget submarines surfaced in Sydney Harbor and tried to wreak havoc with the U.S. and Australian fleets docked there. One of the subs fired a torpedo at point blank at the Chicago. It missed and blew up a Dutch barracks ship - nearby, killing scores of Dutch sailors. In all, Mr. Wells spent more than three years in combat, earning five battle stars, the Navy Commendation ribbon and a purple heart for a shrapnel wound he' d received. Still he remained modest about his war efforts, writing in a memoir of his experiences, " I wasn' t a hero\'85I just repaid my country a little for being free." Mr. Wells' luck didn' t end at just surviving the war. Onboard a convalescence ship headed from Guadalcanal to San Francisco, he won $550 in a poker game\emdash a fortune for a Marine making $20 a month. While on extended medical leave at the U.S. Naval Hospital in New Orleans, he used his poker winnings and wartime savings to buy a Buick convertible with red leather interior and played the dashing Marine about town, driving around with the top down in his dress blue uniform. The leave turned into a temporary assignment at the Naval Air Base in Houma from which blimps flew anti-submarine scouting mission over the Gulf of Mexico. It was during this time that he met Henrietta " Bonnie" Toups at a dance in Thibodaux. Like many wartime couples, they courted and married quickly (in their case, six weeks.) Their wedding date, Aug. 11, 1945, was preceded by two world-changing events just days before\emdash the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After the war, Mr. Wells worked briefly as a guard at the Blimp Base, then went to work for the Post Office. By 1957, the Wellses had six sons and the country boy in Rex chafed at living in the confines of town. So he took a job with Southdown Sugars and moved his family to Bayou Black, where they would live for the next 10 years on a five-acre farm owned by the sugar company. It was there that he struck up a friendship with a bayou neighbor, Annie Miller (now known as Alligator Annie), who convinced him that he and his growing brood of sons could earn good extra money lending their services to a thriving import-export business she ran at the time. The business happened to be live snakes, so for a number of summers Mr. Wells and his sons hunted the woods, fields and marshe s of Bayou Black for all manner of reptiles, which they sold, usually by the pound, to Annie. This sidelight turned out to be a matter of mild contention in Wells household, particularly after a chicken snake captured on one of their expeditions somehow made its way into the house. Mrs. Wells (who had an extreme aversion to snakes) inadvertently found it as she tucked in the sheets to one of the son' s beds. " I think they heard the shriek all the way in Morgan City," recalled Ken Wells of the episode. " It was several days before my mother decided she was going to talk to my father again." Mr. Wells and his wife, Bonnie, also ran popular youth dances at Bayou Black School. Mr. Wells also coached the bayou boys' baseball team and started Bayou Black' s first Boy Scout Troop. It was on a Marine Corps inspired five-mile hike with his troop in 1959, in an area now know as the Mandalay National Wildlife Refuge, that one of his scouts reported to Mr. Wells the presence of a seven-foot alligator in a canal. Rex, who with his father used to hunt gators at night from a pirogue with a .22 rifle, promptly drove home, fetched his shotgun and, with the help of his scouts, bagged the gator. They strapped the gator atop Mr. Wells' Jeep station wagon and drove it up and down the Bayou showing it to everyone. Mr. Wells left Southdown and Ba you Black in 1967 to take a job with Sears in what was then the spanking new Southland Mall. He moved to Duet Street and ran the Sears' sporting goods department for a number of years, but corporate life was never to his liking--indeed, he was fond of saying that he never found an organization to work for that ever lived up to the Marines. After leaving Sears, he returned to the Post Office, from which he retired in 1985. Mr. Wells' chief trademark may have been his lifelong love of the outdoors. He was a crack shot and never missed an opening day of the Louisiana squirrel season until late in his life, when fading eyesight and a slowed step made hunting more difficult. In the 1970' s, he was a well- known figure in the Houma-Terrebonne fishing rodeo scene, where he earned the honorary title of Mr. " Sac-a-Lait" for his prowess in catching trophy versions of the fish that most of the world know as the crappie. During that time, Mr. Wells also wrote a fishing and hunting column for the Houma Courier titled " Sportsman' s Paradise." He was a writer of strong and sometimes eccentric opinions, once advocating the total eradication of tchoupique, which he blamed for suppressing sac-a-lait and bass populations. Mr. Wells went fishing with his son Pershing on the day before he died and caught a six-pound black drum, claiming bragging rig hts, as he often could, to the biggest fish of the day. Mr. Wells was preceded in death by one of his sons, Jerry, who died at the age of 16 in 1968 of viral encephalitis. He is survived by five other sons who, all in their own way, have made their marks on the Houma-Terrebonne area: Bill, former owner of Apple Audio and now an administrator at LaSalle University in Mandeville; Ken, a former Courier managing editor; he is now a Page One editor for the Wall street Journal in New York and author of " Meely LaBauve," a critically acclaimed novel of Cajun Louisiana published by Random House this spring; Pershing, a w ell-known Houma guitarist and recording engineer who has made numerous appearances at the New Orleans Jazz Festival; he is currently vice-president of sales for Advanced Software in Houma; Chris, also a noted Houma musician; he is a longtime Terrebonne Parish teacher, former president of the teacher' s union and active in the Houma-Terrebonne Red Cross; and Bob, also a well-known guitar player who is currently a final-year nursing student at Nicholls State University. In lieu of flowers, the Wells family asks that donations be made to the Bonnie Toups Wells Prize, a journalism award established at Nicholls State University four years ago to encourage student writing on Cajun themes and culture. Checks may be sent to Dr. Alfred N. Delahaye, Mass Communications Department, Nicholls State University, Thibodaux, LA 70301. Samart Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
