He was a graduate of Pensacola Junior College and attended the University of Southern Mississippi in the field of geology. He became a successful chemical engineer in South Louisiana with his own engineering company working on oil rigs for months at a time. He also bought and developed Bayou Black Marina in Gibson. Because of health problems, he sold the marina, retired and moved to Philadelphia to be near family. He was an active member of Good Hope Baptist Church in Philadelphia and considered the people of the church as part of his own family.
