Calvin Joseph Authement, 83, died Nov. 17, 2000, at 1:13 a.m. The Houma native and Dulac resident served on several parish and business boards, while making his mark in the seafood industry. Authement was best known as a successful canner and sun-dried shrimp processor, who worked along the bayous of southern Terrebonne Parish for 41 years. "He was a pioneer in the seafood industry," said long time friend and Houma businessman Kerry Chauvin. "He had a lot of integrity and I respected him for his business ability. He was one of the key individuals who owned seafood processing plants down in Dulac and he was well respected by the fishermen in the area." Authement served as president of Calvin J. Authement Packing Co. Inc. and A.J. Authement Co. Inc. He was also vice president of Authement Packing Co. Inc. Authement's civic duties included a stint as president of Waterworks District No. 2; he served on the board until early 2000. "He was a real fine man, as well as a president," said Al Poiencot, superintendent of distribution for Consolidated Waterworks. "Everybody on the board respected him and liked him." Paul Gregoire, who worked for the Authement family for 49 years, described Authement as a "very religious man who was dedicated to the parish." "I'm pretty sure everyone on the bayou knew him good," Gregoire said. "He was a fine business man and he will really be missed, I guarantee you that." Authement also served on the People's Drug Store board and on the First National Bank board of directors for 26 years. A fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Authement was also a member of the American Legion, Krewe of Terranians Carnival Club and the Krewe of Christopher Carnival Club. A World War II veteran, Authement also served as an usher for Holy Family Catholic Church from 1945 to 1990.
