Melvin Jr., 89, a native of Destin, Fla., and resident of Larose for 69 years, died Monday, Aug. 9, 2004. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to funeral time Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cut Off. Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church, with burial in the church cemetery. He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Beluah Petit Melvin; son, M.T. Melvin and daughter-in-law, Louise Adams Melvin; granddaughter, Julie Melvin Peltier, wife of Timothy Peltier of Thibodaux; grandsons, Merwyn "Mel" T. Melvin II, husband of Marcie Dupuy Melvin of Baton Rouge, Vincent J. Melvin, husband of Daphne Theriot Melvin of Cut Off, and Aaron "Bogie" Melvin, husband of Lynn Baham Melvin of Baton Rouge; great-grandchildren, Edward "Buddy" Schertler II, Philip Peltier, Marie Elizabeth Peltier, Brittany Melvin, Mathew Melvin, Nicholas Melvin, Clare Melvin, Andrew E. Melvin and Ellen Melvin; and sisters, Margaret M. Quinn of Tampa, Fla., and Carolyn M. Vagais of Ft. Walton, Fla. He was preceded in death by his father, O.T. Melvin Sr.; his mother, Ellen Destin Melvin; grandson, Andrew John Melvin; great-granddaughters, Emily and Sarah Melvin; and sister, Gwendolyn M. Shaw. He was a 1934 pioneer in marine transportation for the oil industry, owning and operating tugboats under the companies O.T. Melvin Inc. and Maritime Towing Inc. among others. As a Master Mariner, he was licensed for navigating the Mississippi and Ohio rivers and Unlimited tonnage-ocean until his retirement in 1980. In lieu of flowers, donations to Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, P.O. Box 10, Larose, LA 70373, or St. Stanislaus College Prep, 304 South Beach Blvd., Bay Saint Louis, MS 39520, are preferred. Samart Funeral Home of Cut Off is in charge of arrangements.
