The date preceding the obituary is the date of posting on the WWW, not the date of death. ============================= January 20. 2005 12:00AM Sharod Charles [Photo] Sharod Martin Charles, 24, a native and resident of Houma, died at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, after a lengthy struggle with leukemia. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday at Plymouth Rock Baptist Church in Houma. Celebration of Life Musical will follow at 7 p.m. Friday at the church. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, with burial in St. Luke Baptist Church Cemetery. He is survived by his mother, Louvenia Charles of Houma; his father, Donald Charles of Houma; his father who raised him, James Ellis Sr. of Houma; his spiritual father, the Rev. G.R. Washington of Houma; four brothers, Shawn Charles Sr. and wife, Yolanda, of South Carolina, Danielle Simmons and wife, Lameka, of San Antonio, Albert Albohaire of Virginia Beach, Va., and Andrew Coleman of Inglewood, Calif.; three sisters, Carmelita "Lynette" Villavasso and husband, Tyronne, of Harvey, Angela Charles Clay and husband, Chad, of Gretna and Sherneka Charles of Houma; his grandmother, Sadie Charles of Houma; his special friend, Clarissa Davis of Houston; and a host of uncles, aunts, nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, the Rev. Isreal Martin Sr. and Rosa Lee Martin; one brother, Donald Louis Charles Jr.; one aunt, Geraldine Wiggins; and one uncle, Israel Martin Jr. He was a noted musician, community and youth leader. Among his many accomplishments, he founded the AAU Wolves Basketball Team which became state and regional champs and went to the national championship two of their first three years. At 17, he began coaching the Terrebonne Parish Recreation Biddy Basketball program and was selected to coach the All Star Team at various age levels. His Biddy All Star Team became state and regional champs and went to the nationals in his first year. As a minister of music, he directed church choirs of several churches in the Tri-Parish area and various churches in New Orleans. The revitalization of the Celebration Choir for tributes to Dr. Martin Luther King and other occasions was another of his major accomplishments.
