The date preceding the obituary is the date of posting on the WWW, not the date of death. ============================= February 15. 2005 12:47PM Vergil Garlington [Photo] Vergil Leslie Garlington, 84, a native of Allen Parish and resident of Houma, died at his home Monday, Feb. 14, 2005. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Chauvin Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. to funeral time Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Houma. A service of celebration of his life will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Barry Hoekstra, church pastor, and the Rev. Henry Bowdon, former pastor, conducting the service. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Pelican Cemetery in Pelican conducted by the Rev. Doris Sheppard, pastor of Pelican United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Billie Moise Garlington; one sister, Nelda Hamman; one son, Bruce Garlington and wife, Virginia; two daughters, Donna Gleason and husband, Mike, and Patricia Thibodeau and husband, Chris; eight grandchildren, Mitchell Garlington, Marshall Garlington and wife, Julie, Michelle Alessi and husband, Mark, Mark Gleason and wife, Dessi, Matthew Gleason, and Brian, Renee and Nicole Thibodeau; and four great-grandchildren, Ashley and Thomas Alessi and Haven and Seamus Garlington. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hardy Mitchell Garlington and Rosa Arilla Reid Garlington Harless; and one sister, Myrtis Thigpen. He graduated from Oakdale High School in 1938 and earned a degree in mechanical engineering from Louisiana Tech in Ruston. He joined the Army Air Corps and piloted several aircraft including AT-6, AT-7, B-17 and B-29 during World War II. After his discharge from the service, he began a career with Humble Oil and Refining Company, which merged into what is now ExxonMobil. He worked more than 35 years including time spent at Grand Isle as well as in Australia working for Esso International in the Bass Strait. He and his wife retired in 1979 and moved to Houma. They have enjoyed living near close friends and making trips in their motor home to many destinations. One especially remembered trip was to the shuttle launch of John Glenn in Florida. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Houma. Honorary pallbearers are H.L. Jackson and Ken Christopher; and friends from the National Camping Methodists, the Exxon Annuitants Club and the Exxon camping group.
