"Bat" Bateast, 84, a native of Woodville, Miss., and resident of Houma, died at 12:45 p.m. Monday, April 4, 2005. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to funeral time Monday at Beacon Light Baptist Church. Religious services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the church, with burial in Southdown Cemetery. He is survived by five sons, Wilbert A. Bateast Sr., Walter A. Bateast Jr., Stanley J., David and Norman Bateast; nine daughters, the Rev. Margie B. Scott and husband, Richard Sr., Angelina Bateast, Ruby Gail B. Jackson and husband, Leo Sr., of Houma, Sandra Bateast of New Orleans, Joyce B. Nixon and husband, Ambrose, Gwendolyn B. Johnson, and husband, Herman, of Houma, Shelia B. Billiot and husband, James, of Texas, Charlene B. Gray and Nell Bateast of New Orleans; three godchildren, Anita Plain of Woodville, Dawn B. Greay and husband, Malcolm, and Linitta P. Lewis of New Orleans; two sisters, Dorothy B. Singleton and Peacola Parker, both of New Orleans, three sisters-in-law, Barbara Bateast, Gladys C. Ellzey and Hattie C. Beasley; three brother-in-laws, Ralph Palmer of Baton Rouge, Fred Parker and Walter Ellzey, both of New Orleans; his special friend, Frances Moran; 38 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mattie C. Bateast; his parents, Angelina R. Dunbar, Walter Bateast and stepmother Beulah Ford Peyton Bateast; two sons, Ricky and John Bateast; three daughters, Judy Ann, Rose Marie and Marie Ann Bateast; six brothers, William, James, Soloman, Cleveland, Levi and Charles; seven sisters, Alice B. Lee, Leola B. Payne, Lucy B. McDaniel, Elnora B. Turner, Anita B. Brown, Margaret B. Palmer and Carrie Russell. He was Baptist and a veteran of World War II. He was a retired sandblaster with Avondale. He enjoyed gardening. Community Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
