Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at Community Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. to funeral time Saturday at New Rising Sun Baptist Church in Houma. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church, with burial in Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church Cemetery in Gibson. He is survived by his wife, Maxine Madison Poindexter; one son, Derwin K. Poindexter and wife, Peggy Skinner Poindexter; one grandson, Elexis D. Poindexter; one brother, Albert Poindexter of Gibson; and five sisters, Annie P. Rollins of Houma, Rosetta P. Maryland of Houma, Naomi P. McKay of Gibson, Hazey P. Johnson of Gibson and Laura P. Royal of Gibson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Townsend Poindexter and Castina Matthews Poindexter; one brother, Willie Poindexter; and one sister, Mildred Poindexter Mallett. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was director of insurance affairs and a member of the board of directors at Community Funeral Home of Houma. He was an executive board member of Terrebonne Parish NAACP and a member of Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government District No. 8 Recreation Board. He was a member of New Vision Family Worship Center. Community Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
