Watkins Sr., 80, a native and resident of New Iberia, died at 3:40 a.m. Thursday, July 7, 2005. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to funeral time Saturday at David Funeral Home in New Iberia. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Baptist Church, with burial in Rosehill Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Anna Trahan Watkins of New Iberia; three sons, James A. Watkins Jr. of Houma, Gregory P. Watkins of Nashville, Tenn., and Michael A. Watkins of Horn Lake, Miss.; one daughter, Ginger Fay Watkins of Horn Lake; one stepdaughter, Mikkie Smigielski of Morgan City; six grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas V. Watkins and Ida Dupre Watkins; one sister, Ethel W. Peltier; and two brothers, Thomas Watkins and George Adam Watkins. He was a captain in the Salvation Army and a U.S. World War II Navy veteran. He was a Baptist minister, a barber and life insurance agent.
